Queer Quote
"Some folks say that bisexuals are not oppressed because at least we are accepted by mainstream society when we are involved with members of the opposite sex. Agreed, society may like us when we show that piece of who we are. But conditional acceptance is not really acceptance at all." Robyn Ochs

Maddie
Who are you?
Hi, my name is Maddie, she/her/hers.
What are your interests/hobbies?
Cute femmes, films, radical anti-oppression politics. Cultivating my femme-dyke aesthetic. And I'm single! Hint, hint, ladies and non-binary folks.
What does the Cantu mean to you?
While imperfect, the Cant is a place that I've been able to find both a serious and fun community, as well as been able to get away from navigating the world as a trans lady. As good as some parts of the Cant are, I do think there should be a resource center specifically for trans folks on campus, both to navigate health care and legal things and to create a community that is centered on trans people.

While feminist and LGBTQ movements are designed to challenge sexism, they often simultaneously police gender and sexuality-- sometimes just as fiercely as the straight-male-centric mainstream does.

What has the Cant done for you?
Director Deb is back from her stress-related health leave and is working on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during Spring quarter. It's good to be back AND there's plenty of work to be done! We've gotten very good news this past week on 3 accounts: The Student Fee Advisory Committee (SFAC) has awarded Deb's application for a center manager! This full-time position, funded for 2.5 years, will make a profound difference in the Cantu's ability to meet the needs of the UCSC queer community. More details to follow. Our grad student position has been posted to the Career Center's student employment website! While we understand most grad students have their jobs for this academic year, for those who don't or who will be looking for a position for next year, please check out ER#7702 for information and the application. Graduate students with expertise in queer identities/issues, experience in office management and 20 hours/week availability are what we're looking for. Please help spread the word! . . . While we will share more details soon, campus administration has committed to supporting the Cant in adding an education coordinator position to its staff. This sorely needed staffer will oversee campus wide education on LGB and especially T issues and will also help coordinate resources for trans campus members. We are grateful to the administration for being receptive to student requests around critically needed services.
