Happy International Transgender Visibility Day

Fortino Vazquez-
Hernandez Jr.

Who are you?
My name is Fortino, pronouns they, them, theirs, and often he. I am a 4th year, majoring in Literature with a concentration in Spanish and Latin American Lit. From Oakland, Ca as a son if two migrant workers from Puebla, Mexico

What are your interests/ hobbies?
When I am not binge watching shows (Shondaland, duh!) I spend my time reading for leisure and writing poetry. Recently, I competed at the College Union Poetry Slam Invitational at Richmond, VA with a team of poets and landed the 25th spot out of 68 schools. I also love to go on hikes, run, and ride my bike around.

What does the Cant mean to you?
Since I came my freshman year to this space, it has been a space for me to come and feel comfortable in my gender and sexual expression. This is where I have made some really close friends, and have fallen asleep on the couches in between classes on those long school days. Before the drought, I would love staring out of the Cant's huge glass window as the rain poured down. This place has been a home away from home and it helps that it looks like a tree house.

My Rose: An African-American Mother's Story
of AIDS

by Geneva E. Bell

This powerfully intimate narrative follows a mother who struggles with her faith and her love for her son, who has been recently diagnosed with AIDS. This memoir confronts the pains of living with HIV, of the love for family and of unity through faith, and transformation through God's love.

Check it out at the Cantu!
