Runner's Spotlight
Meet Michael Monti who runs in memory of Staff Sgt. Joseph D'Augustine
On March 27, 2012 Marine Corp SSGT Joseph D'Augustine, assigned to 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; was killed in the Helmand province, Afghanistan, while conducting combat operations.
Joey's family is friends with my family. In fact, I'd known him since I was little. Prior to Joey's death, I had been running in support of another veterans charity in the name of my father (a purple heart veteran of Vietnam), my grandfathers, uncles, friends, and cousin, all vets of foreign wars. At Joey's funeral, his family asked for donations to SFF, so when it came time for me to sign up for the ill fated NYC Marathon, I sought out the SFF.
When I looked to run the MCM, instead of asking friends for donations, I asked them to run. Many were inspired by the video of a SFF triple amputee running the Tunnel to Towers, and if he could run 3.1 for fallen fire fighters, we could run 26.2 for him. Our team, Never Again, the first words from my sister (who's running again) after her first and only marathon 3 years ago, came together. Mostly marathon rookies, a few marathoners, a Marine, a Navy SEAL, and Joey's sister, make up our team and is doing a strong job fundraising. We all have our reasons to raise. For me it is honoring Joey and the recently deceased Navy SEALs.

Every day thousands of unsung heroes bring caring and compassion to the lives of millions. Their names are never featured in the headlines, but our world would be a much darker place without them.

A NOTE FROM THE RACE COORDINATOR
Dear Runners,
YOU are our unsung heroes! You, as a team, have raised over $360,000 so far this year! With your continued support through fundraising and training, you are bringing awareness to the Semper Fi Fund. We can not thank you enough.
There are less than 80 days until the MCM. Don't forget, the deadline for raising the $400 for our mission comes up quickly, so please continue fundraising.
There are still running slots available for MCM 10K, so if you know anyone who missed the MCM registration, but would still like to join our team and run the 10K, please have them contact us soon. We want to see as many of our team shirts on that course as possible!
Thank you for your "Support Through Sport" and know that your fundraising efforts help ensure that our heroes are never alone on their road to recovery.

SEMPER FIDO'S FUNDRAISING TIPS
Semper Fido asked Team "Never Again's" Captain Michael Monti for some of his fundraising tips.
Team "Never Again" has raised $6,535 to date!
Being a fundraiser I've learned a few things:
1. Don't be embarrassed to ask anyone. You are not asking for money for you or your race, you are asking to support the cause. Ask multiple times. Put your website out in emails and on social media every week or so. Make sure everyone sees your message. A month before the race, flood everyone with news, making sure they know the race is soon.
2. Don't assume someone won't give. Ask anyway. His dad could be a Veteran, so the cause could hit close to home.
3. Take whatever people can give. Some people are embarrassed because they don't have much. Last race, I had a girl I who is down on her luck stop by with a $10 bill. That $10 meant more to her than most of the $100 and $200 donations I've gotten, but she helped the cause.
4. Have your website on you at all times. I have business cards made with my website on it. They cost like 5 bucks for 500 cards, but when you're in the bar and talking about the race and someone says they're interested in donating, hand them the card, it's much better than, "I'll get you the info soon". You'll forget to pass the info.
5. Think out of the box. I live on the corner of a cross street where runners, bikers, and dog walkers pass. I had a banner made saying I was running the race for SFF, take a card. The number of complete strangers that donate is amazing.
6. Get the cause out there. Wear your SFF shirt at every race. People ask what it is. Tell everyone that your running and why.
I could raise $400 in my sleep, $400 should be your minimum, not your goal.
