Hello Stanley Families-
I was glad to see so many parents for our Friday Forum, held on the 25th in the Stanley library. I shared an overview of Stanley programs - academic, enrichment, and some of our STEM initiatives - that contribute to our whole-child philosophy. I would encourage everyone to take a look at this short video about the shifting world and skills that we believe are important for all students and people to develop: http://www.letitripple.org/adaptable_mind I would also love for families to take a look at the Stanley Website, which has some great resources for families in helping support their Middle School student. These include the Challenge Success tab: http://sms-lafsd-ca.schoolloop.com/challengesuccess We believe initiatives like Challenge Success, Character Counts, Using a Growth Mindset, and student programs like lunchtime clubs are just a few ways we are working towards developing healthy, happy students. *One quick reminder that selling candy or other unauthorized items on campus is not allowed.
I appreciate the honest and lively discussion we had about a variety of Stanley topics, and I look forward to seeing you at next Forum on October 23!

The Gift of Failure
Fostering Intrinsic Motivation and Resilience in Kids
7:00 PM, October 8
Acalanes Performing Arts Center Acalanes High School 1200 Pleasant Hill Road Jessica Lahey is a contributing writer for The Atlantic and an English teacher. She writes the bi-weekly New York Times column,
"The Parent-Teacher Conference," is a commentator for Vermont Public Radio, and is the author of The Gift of Failure.
A longtime middle school and high school teacher, Lahey is also the parent of middle-school aged kids. She has seen the over-parenting phenomenon from the viewpoint of a teacher whose students would not take risks for fear of failing. She then realized that she was a part of the parent culture which, with all the best intentions, was contributing to this phenomenon.
Lahey shares the message that failure is vital to success, and shows parents how to offer support even as they encourage autonomy.
If you have any questions, please email HollyNolan@comcast.net or Gwenhelvey@sbcglobal.net.

Rising Above - Overcoming Obstacles In Spite of Adversity
7:00-8:30 PM, October 26
Stanley Middle School, Multi Use Room 3455 School Street, Lafayette
Stephen Wampler grew up in Lafayette and is a graduate of Acalanes High School. He returns to our community to tell his amazing story of grit, steel will and sheer guts as he climbed the face of El Capitan in Yosemite with the use of only one limb, his right arm.
Born with a severe form of Cerebral Palsy, Stephen has never let his physical challenges define or limit him. His desire is to enable and inspire all kids to rise above their circumstances or physical abilities and work toward accomplishing challenges they place on themselves, and enjoy all that comes from the process.
He is the founder of the Stephen J. Wampler Foundation, which provides life-changing opportunities for hundreds of kids with physical disabilities and is designed to foster adventure, optimism and self-reliance. To learn more, go to http://www.wamplerfoundation.org For more information, contact: Dolorez Dumas-Aris Parent Ed Co-Chair for District (925)899-6967

A big thank you to all of the parent volunteers who came out in the heat to sell tickets and represent LPIE at the Art and Wine Festival last weekend!
