PTA Announcements & Events
PTA President's Message
I hope you and your family had a terrific Thanksgiving break.  We've now entered that time of year when our calendars work at warp speed...buckle up!  With that in mind, I have two announcements for events that seem absurdly out in the future, but will be here before we know it:

#1:  Save the date:  Stanley CommUNITY Social on Friday, Feb 20th at 6:30-10:30pm
Plan on attending a laid back, just-for-fun night of dinner, drinks & DJ that brings together Stanley parents and staff.  If this social is like last year's, our hip-hopping Principal and a talented troupe of teachers may offer a little live entertainment as an evening highlight! The event is again being co-chaired by Tina Frechman and Paula Carter (shorthand: this will be a great, sell-out party).  Mark your calendar now and be ready to buy your event tickets when they go on sale in January!

#2:  Lafayette Youth Arts Society (LYAS) 2nd Annual Writing & Photography Contest: Open Now; Entries Due January 31st.
Ok, this is not a PTA or school-sponsored event...but this contest is specifically for middle schoolers from Lafayette, so it can't get more local!  This contest was conceived by two amazingly impressive local high schoolers as a structured opportunity for 6-8th grade photographers and writers to explore their talents and shine.  They've selected a variety of interesting topics to choose from (submit a photograph in the "worm's eye view" category, or compose an essay to answer the writing prompt, "Are we alone?" among other possibilities).  And this isn't a "certificate of participation" type contest--they've got cash prizes and real judges lined up! (Robert Hass, Pulitzer Prize winner and American Poet Laureate, is one of the judges...seriously.)  Learn more about this uniquely local, middle school-only opportunity at:  www.lyas.org

Enjoy your week!

Stanley Music
Stanley Singers Perform with UC Berkeley Chorus

Stanley musicians recently performed in Carl Orff's Carmina Burana as part of a children's choir comprised of Lamorindans assembled by Stanley chorus vocal coach and accompanist, Xiomara Di Maio.
Marika Kuzma, director of choirs at UC Berkeley, contacted Ms. Di Maio in hopes that she could include Lamorinda children in the Hertz Hall performances in Berkeley on October 24th and 25th.
Thirteen singers, ranging in age from 7 to 13, performed two movements in Latin of Orff's famous work, Amor Volat Undique and Tempus Est Iocundum.
The vocalists from Stanley included Stephanie Liu, Katie Bettencourt, Helena Holmberg, Veronica Mesaros, Michael Brennan and Sophie Kessler.

Sister-to-Sister

A New Program Begins in January, Registration Open

Something new! The American Association of University Women's Sister-to-Sister outreach program has changed from a yearly Summit held in March to three two-hour workshops on January 11, February 8, and March 15 from 2:30pm to 4:30pm.

We are excited about this change because it arises out of the desire of the high school girls, who want to follow up with their "little sisters," to find out how they are doing. One girl wrote, "

I think having follow up time to catch up with our little sisters would really show them that we care about them being happy and successful in life." This new program provides two such opportunities.

The 2015 Sister-to-Sister program will be held at the Orinda Community Church located at 10 Irwin Way, Orinda.  Registration is now open. The cost is $45 if registered by December 15th.  We are having a special "Register With a Friend" discount of $10 off ($35 each participant).  After December 15, registration is $55 each or $45 each for "Register With a Friend" promotion.

Visit our website to learn more about Sister-to-Sister at oml-ca.aauw.net/s2s/, where you will also find an application form. For more information please contact Laura Wittenberg at (925) 788-0901 or laura.wittenberg.mft@gmail.com.
