NOVEMBER 2014

Meredith

Through your generosity, LPIE continues to invest in our six Lafayette public schools. While the areas of support differ at the elementary, middle and high schools, LPIE is committed to maintaining educational excellence and adding new areas that enhance and expand learning opportunities for students in Lafayette.

Last month The Slice focused on elective support at Stanley and additional class sections at Acalanes. This month we spotlight the support of Instructional Aides in our elementary school classrooms.  These classroom partners work with teachers to create the best learning experience they can for all our students.

After eight years of remarkable volunteer service,
Tom Mulvaney is retiring from the AUHSD Governing Board. We are thrilled to recognize all of his efforts and achievements, and are incredibly grateful to have his talent and energy continuing to work for LPIE as our Community-at-Large Representative.

Please be sure to visit us at one of our upcoming events this holiday season.  Both community events provide opportunities for you to support LPIE and provide funds to support our students.
  • Walker & Bowes Glass Pumpkin Sale at The Art Room now through 11/30, Artist's Reception on Friday 11/14 at 6pm and Glass Blowing Demonstration on Saturday 11/15 at 10am and 2pm
  • #GivingTuesday at both Lafayette Starbucks locations on Tuesday 12/2 from 3-6pm
More details about both events below!

I want to thank our amazing group of K5 School Chairs
featured in the volunteer spotlight. These volunteers work tirelessly on behalf of LPIE and our schools.  Thank you for sharing your time and talent on behalf of our community's children!  It is a pleasure to work with you and your school teams.

Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving!

It's no secret that Instructional Aides are vital contributors to effective learning. By committing $300,000LPIE's investment in classroom aides ensures every elementary classroom has much needed additional support, allowing for
small group instruction, individual attention, and increased learning opportunities through differential learning and teacher directed instruction.

Instructional aides and teachers are partners in the classroom.  They collaborate and strive to meet every child's emotional and academic needs and to maintain the daily classroom routine.  It is truly a remarkable relationship that allows the children in the classroom to thrive and reach their greatest potential.

All four Lafayette elementary schools are fortunate to have a group of amazingly dedicated and highly qualified instructional aides who further the power of education for students in every elementary classroom, transitional kindergarten through fifth grade.

"We are truly fortunate to have dedicated and talented aides in our classrooms.  With the demands of rigorous curriculum, our commitment to differentiation, and an increased focus on conferring with students as part of the workshop model, the need for the partnerships between teachers and aides is more important than ever.  Our aides demonstrate an ongoing commitment to deepening their understanding of curriculum and instructional practices, and our students benefit greatly from their efforts to learn and stay current.  We are very thankful for LPIE's continued support of this important priority."

- Wendy Patterson, Assistant Superintendent, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Lafayette School District
INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE SPOTLIGHT
Meet a Few of the Amazing Classroom Aides!

A visit to the classroom is the most powerful way to illustrate the impact of instructional aides.  Below is a spotlight from each school.  We wish we could give a highlight of each of the outstanding classroom aides at all four elementary schools!

Burton Valley Elementary:  Mimi Bupp, Instructional Aide to Kyra Rodriguez, 4th Grade
by Lynn Salazar

Believe it or not, Mrs. Bupp is in her 15th year as an Instructional Aide to Mrs. Rodriguez. She grew up in Texas, where she attended college and then worked as a Physician's Assistant and a Retinal Photographer. In 1972, she moved to the Bay Area. Her son and daughter attended Burton Valley Elementary, Stanley, and Acalanes High School and are both now scientists!

Mrs. Bupp was very involved in the classrooms for both her children during their time at BVE.  When they moved on to middle school, "she really liked the community and culture here and wanted to stay a part of it." BVE was fortunate that she decided to become a teacher's aide.

Mrs. Bupp and her classroom teacher Mrs. Rodriguez aide bveboth share a passion and fondness for nature. Mrs. Rodriguez encouraged Mrs. Bupp to create a California Natural History Program.  The children love it! One student said "I love how Mrs. Bupp teaches us about California Natural History. She took us on a nature walk and showed us some really cool things I never would have noticed if it weren't for her."  The students discuss what they see and then draw the items in a book that becomes a keepsake at the end of the year.  It is very helpful that Mrs. Bupp is an artist, sculptor and painter as well as a nature-enthusiast.

Kyra Rodriguez notes, "I couldn't do my job without Mimi. What she adds to the classroom through her knowledge, gentle ways, and quick wit is unique. She is truly one of the kindest, most special people I know. As an instructional aide she works closely with each student and provides them with the extra support they all need."

Principal Sue Rusk agrees, "Our partnership with LPIE and the support they provide our school is invaluable. We appreciate the commitment our community makes to ensure that our students receive a high quality education.  LPIE funds instructional aides to work in our classrooms alongside our teachers. Our aides provide instructional and clerical support for our teachers, allowing them with more time for planning and teaching. Our students benefit from small groups and one-on-one support from our instructional aides."

Lafayette Elementary:  Karen Johnson, Instructional Aide to Katy Motes, 2nd Grade
by Eli Chan

As you walk onto the campus at Lafayette Elementary, you will notice that each classroom is run like a well-oiled machine. Students are excited because learning opportunities abound. This atmosphere is possible thanks to instructional aides.

"Aides assist the students and teachers with a myriad of small and large time-consuming tasks (everything from tying shoes and bandaging cuts to correcting papers and small group instruction) that allows the teacher to focus on teaching," notes Karen Johnson, aide to second-grade teacher, Mrs. Motes. Her presence in the classroom allows for differential learning: she works with individuals and small groups to provide clarification or extra hands-on practice.

aide"With the many levels and individualized instruction within the classroom, Karen helps me meet the needs of all of my second grade students.  She helps me provide differentiated instruction each day and reinforces concepts or grade level material that has been taught or needs to be reviewed," explains Mrs. Motes. "I am so blessed to work with Karen Johnston each week!"

Mrs. Johnson is a credentialed teacher who  holds a B.S. in political science and a Multiple Subject teaching credential.  She has taught grades five through eight in California and New Jersey, so she brings a great deal of experience and insight to Mrs. Motes' classroom.  She took a break from teaching to raise her three children and volunteer in their classrooms before getting back into the classroom herself.

"My youngest child had just started school and I was thinking of getting back into teaching and wanted to see how things had changed in the time I was not working. I didn't plan on staying this long but I really liked the time spent as an aide," she says. "Becoming an aide has provided many wonderful and rewarding experiences for me without taking away time from my family."

The 2014-15 school year marks the sixth anniversary of the partnership of Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Motes. Their long-term collaboration means Mrs. Johnson is familiar with her teacher's routine and style. She knows the students and is capable of carrying out the teacher's plans for that day when called in to substitute. This year, she is teaching "Do the Math" to reinforce new math strategies and runs the "Read Naturally" program to support reading fluency and comprehension among students as they progress through the Readers and Writers Workshops.

Happy Valley Elementary: Deanna Poulsen, Instructional Aide for 1st & 2nd Grades
by Jane Smith

Without LPIE, without Science, without Music, without Art....without our Instructional Aides. Could you imagine that at our school?

Meet Deanna Poulsen, one of the many dedicated Classroom Aides at Happy Valley. "Without Deanna, our classroom aide, we would be missing out on so much. The students love her. She supports learning in so many ways and she is invaluable".  Nicole Singh, 2nd grade teacher

AideHappyValley

Mrs. Poulsen is an instructional aide in 1st and 2nd grade classrooms, works as office manager assistant and substitute teaches at HVE. Previously, she has been an aide in 3rd, and 4th grade classrooms and worked at the Lafayette Library for 4 years.

Mrs. Poulsen is truly a part of the Lafayette community and Happy Valley School. The Poulsen family has lived in Lafayette for over 20 years, with two daughters who attended Lafayette Elementary and Stanley, and are currently attending Acalanes High School (Go Dons!).  She knows the importance of community involvement. She has volunteered as a parent in the classroom and Lafayette Elementary library, after school and as Girl Scout cookie chairman.

"After volunteering at my girls' school for so many years it was natural for me to take an aide position at Happy Valley.  I love being in the classroom, helping students with things like small reading groups and other activities as well as supporting the teachers with anything from prep work to administrative duties," stated Mrs. Poulsen, with a warm smile.

Classroom aides like Mrs. Poulsen play an enormous role in our children's education. Being an instructional aide demands broad knowledge of subject matter, curriculum, and standards; enthusiasm, a caring attitude, and a love of learning; knowledge of discipline and classroom management techniques; and a desire to make a difference in the lives of young people.

"Mrs. Poulsen wears many hats at Happy Valley.  She supports teachers and students as a Classroom Aide, as well as office manager assistant. We are so lucky to have her and appreciate all that she does for our school". Shayna Peeff, Happy Valley Principal. That is true! Lucky are the Husky students who have Mrs. Poulsen as their classroom aide.

Springhill Elementary: Meagan Hagglund, Instructional Aide to Kathy Miller, Kindergarten
by Alison Stripling

"Meagan Hagglund is an amazing classroom aide! She creates a positive and safe learning environment for all students. She is an asset to the educational community and to each student's life she touches. I am so fortunate to share my classroom with such a kind and caring educator." Kathy Miller, Kindergarten Teacher at Springhill Elementary

In her fourth year working with Mrs. Miller, it is very clear that Mrs. Hagglund enjoys her time as an aide in the kindergarten classroom. On any given day you'll find Mrs. Hagglund singing rhymes as her students jump rope. After each song, Mrs. Hagglund gives the students high fives as they get in line for another turn.

aideMrs. Hagglund started working with students early, getting a job at the local preschool while she attended Miramonte High School. She went on to study at UC Berkeley and graduated with a minor in Education. Confirming her passion for teaching, she got her multiple-subject Credential at Dominican College in San Rafael. Her first job was teaching kindergarten in Kentfield, CA before she chose to stay local and teach first grade at Burton Valley Elementary. One year later, she had her first daughter.

She stayed home to raise her three girls until her youngest daughter went into first grade, and she was asked to work with Mrs. Miller as her aide.

Mrs. Hagglund is passionate about her work, "Working with kids one-to-one is so effective at this age because kids can be 100% engaged--which can be hard at age five!"

Aside from one-to-one interaction, she can also pull small groups and use math manipulatives, work on writing using learned strategies or even play a game that is relevant to the unit the class is studying. She works with students in small groups so she is able to assess and give feedback. She feels lucky to be able to impact 21 kindergarteners' lives three days a week and blessed that kids make her want to come back year after year.

When asked if she'd want to be an aide for any other grade, she says, "Kindergarten is so important. I have a connection with the young kids. I love to be able to help kids grow from the very beginning and work with each student every day."

Thank you to Meagan Hagglund for being one of many fantastic aides at Springhill Elementary.

LPIE VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Meet the LPIE School Chairs and School Teams

Ever wonder how LPIE accomplishes so much in so many places? LPIE is in the music room and in the science lab. It's in the classroom and the counseling room. It's in local art displays, the computer lab, the Art & Wine Festival and running around the Reservoir with the Lafayette community. LPIE organizes Art Fairs and Science Fairs, fundraises for increased educational opportunities for our students, and recruits volunteers.

All of this is made possible with the help of our LPIE School Chairs.  They are the primary representatives of LPIE at every school site and lead large groups of volunteers to provide support for the many activities of LPIE.  They liaise with their school parent organizations (PTA, PC and PFC), principal and school staff and help bring LPIE programs and events onto every campus and make LPIE's crucial school funding role known to every parent.

School Chairs also serve on the LPIE General Board, providing input on how LPIE funds are raised and the direction for funding such programs as science, art, music, counseling, instructional aides, technology, and more.

LPIE couldn't be successful without the hard work and dedication of the LPIE School Chairs and their team of volunteers at each school. Meet each of this year's K5 LPIE School Chairs below.

Meredith White grew up in San Diego and studied Advertising at San Diego State.  Eleven years ago, she and her husband Ben moved to Lafayette when she was nine months pregnant with their first daughter without knowing a SOUL!  Now with three girls - Stanley 6th grader Laurel plus Burton Valley 3rd grader Taylor and 1st grader Elizabeth - Meredith is fully immersed in the Lafayette community.  Meredith notes, "I volunteer my time with LPIE because I believe that having a successful education foundation is what sets Lafayette School district apart and makes it a step above the other 'good' school districts.  The community commitment to education is incredible!"

Tina Sebree is a Lafayette native who studied History at UC Davis and minored in Rhetoric & Communications.  Tina worked as a Litigation Paralegal at Heller Ehrman & McAuliffe in San Francisco before she and her husband Mike (from Moraga) settled in Lafayette in 1997, because they knew "it's a great place to raise a family".  Tina started volunteering in her kids' classrooms at Burton Valley and she's held various positions with Lafayette Juniors since 2008.  She was the LPIE Art Fair Chair at BVE for four years and is currently on the LPIE board as the BVE School Chair.  She and Mike have two kids, Claire is an 8th grader at Stanley and Patrick is a 4th grader at BVE.  Tina notes, "I became involved with LPIE because I loved the Art Fair.  I've stayed involved with LPIE because I've learned first hand what an important piece the education foundation is in maintaining the level of education we have here in Lafayette.  It's also been a great avenue to meet and work with other members of our Lafayette community outside of my own Burton Valley neighborhood."

After college she worked in the biotech industry for Ciba Corning Diagnostics and then Chiron Corporation as a Project Manager for cross-functional development teams. In 1997, Paulie segued into the commercial construction industry, and after her oldest son was born in 2001, she worked mostly part time until two years ago when she began working as a project manager for Mozilla on the facilities side.  Since having children, Paulie's volunteer work has been centered on school-related activities.  "I started volunteering for Lafayette Elementary's International Night in 2006 and am still doing that although this school year will be my last year chairing that event. I'm going to miss it! I've also served on the LES PTA board as VP Legislation and Parliamentarian, and of course this is my fourth year volunteering for LPIE."

Paulie and her husband Matt Fabela moved to Lafayette in October 2006 when their oldest son started kindergarten. "We debated about whether to move back to Berkeley or out to Lafayette, and ultimately Lafayette won us over because of the great schools here - of course!" Now with their oldest son Maverick in 8th grade at Stanley and their youngest, Dashiell in 5th grade at Lafayette Elementary, Paulie reflects,  "The primary reason I volunteer for LPIE is because I believe it's one of the crucial ingredients that make Lafayette schools such a great place for my children to get an education."

Beth Soto studied Journalism at the University of Oregon after growing up in Walnut Creek.  She worked in Advertising Account Management.  Beth "moved to Lafayette in 2008 from Marin to be closer to family and friends, and of course, for the schools!"  She and her husband Bob McClain have four kids ages 5, 10, 10 and 12.  "I feel so lucky to have been involved with LPIE for the past 4 years.  It is an incredibly efficient and well-run organization.  Our schools just would not be what they are without the funding and enrichment programs that LPIE provides."

Rachel worked as VP of Marketing at Vinfolio and Director or Marketing at MyPoints. She has volunteered for Golden Gate Mothers Group (Treasurer 2009-11), Lafayette Juniors (2011- present) and Bay Area Ridge trail (2005-2008).  With a kindergarten son at Happy Valley and a two-year old son at home, Rachel has jumped onto the LPIE board, "We moved to Lafayette because of the schools. Volunteering for LPIE is doing my part in keeping our schools great for my boys and community."

Jane Smith originates from Orange, California.  She attended Arizona State University where she studied communications.  Her husband Ian is from Orinda so when a promotion prompted them to move back to the Bay Area, they chose Lafayette.  Their two sons Miller (4th) and Branson (1st) attend Happy Valley Elementary. Jane's work experience includes Regional Director of Training/Development for InterContinental Hotels Group, Director of Family Activities for Club Med (North America).  This is her second year representing Happy Valley on the LPIE board. - GO GIANTS!!!

Yumi Chelemedos is from Nagasaki, Japan.  She studied Business Administration & Computer Science at Oregon State University and conducted her postgraduate study at Stanford University and University of Virginia (Graduate School of Banking).  Yumi worked as a CPA at Arthur Andersen for 5 years before joining Wells Fargo in San Francisco.  She's held various financial and business executive positions at Wells Fargo, retiring as Senior Vice President, M&A and Strategies in 2004.

Falling in love with the climate, location, cultural diversity and good schools, Yumi has lived in Lamorinda for over 15 years!  She and her husband Roger moved to Lafayette about 5 years ago, seeking a bigger house with a level backyard to raise their three daughters - a fourth grader and twin second graders at Springhill.

She's been an active volunteer at Springhill in the classroom, at the library and at various school events.  This is Yumi's first year on the LPIE board and working to support Springhill students.  She also volunteers for her daughters' Girl Scout troops and is currently an assistant leader for her twins' troop.  She enjoys volunteering for her church, golf club, and her kids summer camps.

Yumi is inspired to volunteer for LPIE, "When I see that special 'aha, I get it' look on a kid's face, either doing a math problem, writer's workshop or art, it says it all...it's priceless. Our children are fortunate to have access to such high-quality, exciting educational programs and teaching staff at public schools in Lafayette.  Thanks to LPIE for helping to fund these great programs and making it all possible."

A southern California native, Judy Hardin attended UC Irvine as an undergrad majoring in Social Ecology, then earned her MBA at University of Southern California.  She moved to Lafayette for the schools and wonderful sense of community.  Judy, who has served on the LPIE board for the past two years, shares, "I volunteer for LPIE because I love everything that LPIE supports, which are, unfortunately, many of the programs that could have been eliminated due to budget cuts. Having recently moved from a neighboring community that doesn't have an education foundation, we've experienced first hand the power of LPIE. I want to ensure that we have a very strong education foundation here in Lafayette so that our children continue to have a wonderful educational experience. "
