A Note From LillianLillian

Dear Parents and Families,

As we head into October, our students are knee-deep into their first major projects of the year! Our ninth graders are helping to construct a playground with the HACER project in Logan Heights, writing memoirs with an accompanying soundtrack, and penning scary stories that they will transform into a full-fledged Casa de Miedo. Our sophomores are learning about chemistry through food, developing a performance cycle around the theme of tribes, and conducting field research in the community in preparation for the South Bay Economic Summit. Our juniors are launching the first literary series in the city of Chula Vista, digging into Walt Whitman while exploring the chaparral around our school, and developing their own Field Guide to Ecotourism in San Diego. Finally, our seniors are diving into the engineering design process, stepping into the shoes of radio journalists, and forming their senior project plans. It's going to be a busy month!

We are thrilled that so many of you joined us for our Open House, as well as our first Family Bridge event of the year! If you missed these events, please know that we are planning many more opportunities for you to connect with our staff and to learn more about our school. Each month, we will host an open invitation Family Bridge dinner, an opportunity to break bread together, while digging into important topics like internship, equity in education, supporting struggling students, and more. Dinner starts at 6 p.m., but I invite you to join me for "Appetizers with Lillian" at 5:30, when we can chat more informally and get to know each other.

Happy autumn,
Lillian Hsu

Una Nota de Lillian

Estimados padres y familias,

Feliz otoo,
Lillian Hsu

What Can You Do?

High school is an interesting time. You may feel tugged between wanting to make sure that you continue to provide the support that your child needs, while trying to create spaces so that they can grow. The process requires baby steps.

In fact, your adolescent's brain is somewhat like that of a baby. It is during this time in mid adolescence that your child's brain undergoes an amazing transformational process. Stuff that is not necessary is being "pruned" like a tree and new growth is happening amazingly fast.

During this process, they need a lot of sleep, may be prone to irritability, and issues may arise that have never arisen before. If your child is constantly questioning you, you feel like you are on an emotional roller coaster, or some of the decisions they make lack common sense, you are not alone. Welcome to the world of parenting the adolescent!

It is easier to have patience with the cranky two or three-year old than it is sometimes to have patience with the mid adolescent, but there are many parallels to these two growth periods in human development.

Here are some strategies and suggestions for navigating adolescence:

  • Let them have space. Allow them space and time for themselves to process the many changes that are going on in their bodies and minds.
  • Encourage them to expand their knowledge. This is a crucial time for the brain to hardwire new experiences.
  • Let them reinvent themselves. Maybe your child has always been the artist, but maybe now she wants to try tennis. Maybe your son has always been introverted, but now wants to hang out after school in Music Box. Don't let them box themselves in...it is a great time to try new things.

  • Permtanles reinventarse. Let them reinvent themselves.
