December Haiti Mission
|  Mission to Haiti December 2014 Rabbi Sid and 21 Adat Shalom Congregants are traveling to Haiti to help build homes and work with Pastor Johnny's church. We each plan to bring 1-2 large suitcases filled with donated items to Haiti. Please help us with this effort. There will be collection boxes in the Adat Shalom foyer beginning Saturday, December 6. - The Sunday Series: Modern Markers of Modernity: Haskalah and Hasidism in the European Jewish Community with Dr. Eliyana Adler from 10:00AM - 12:00PM.The final class of three, will continue the discussion about the new intellectual and social trends profoundly changing the European Jewish community in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. (Please prepare for the class with these reading materials. (Meet in the Library.)

- Shabbat Matters with Susan Gaeta on Interacting with Your Children from 9:30AM - 10:30AM. Chochma (practical knowledge and wisdom), Binah (intuition, relationships), Da'at (experiential knowledge), all words that can be used to understand how we bring our brain to bear on the world around us. Susan Gaeta will teach you how to fully bring your mind and all its attributes to bear on your interactions with your children. (Meet in the Double Classroom.)
- Shulcan Ivrit: The Hebrew Table Group 1 from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM (following the Oneg.) Catch up on current events in Israeli news while improving your Hebrew skills. Join Sahar for casual Hebrew conversation. Group 1 is for those who read but do not fluently speak Hebrew. We will read and translate Hebrew newspaper articles, explaining unfamiliar words as we go, with English discussion of the article to follow. (Meet in the Double Classroom.)

- Contemporary Israeli Literature in English: Encountering the Complexity of Israeli Existence from 10:00AM - 12:00 PM, with Rabbi George, Haya Laufer and Luther Jett. This literature course will meet to discuss selected literary works (novels and short stories) by major, contemporary Israeli authors. (Meet in the Library.)

The Religious Practices Committee (RPC) is rolling up its metaphorical sleeves and getting ready to tackle some issues of interest and impact to the Adat Shalom community. The full agenda is posed on our List Serve.) We invite and welcome all who are interested in participating to join in an open meeting of the RPC to take place at Adat Shalom on Wednesday, December 10th, from 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM in the Synagogue Library .
We encourage you to attend and get on board. (If you want to participate but are unable to attend, please let me know and we'll keep you in the loop.) Hoping to see you there. |
Coping with Aging Relatives |  Our support group for those Coping with Aging Relatives will meet this Shabbat, December 13th, from 12:30-2:00 PM. Are you worried about parent(s) or other relative(s)? Concerned about their living situation? Are there driving issues? Are you feeling overwhelmed? Don't know where to turn? Fill a plate at the oneg and join us in the library at 12:30 PM. Come share your concerns, learn from others experiencing similar challenges, and receive practical, emotional and spiritual support in a confidential setting. Manure Festival |  Sunday, December 14 from noon to 2:00 PM: Manure Festival in the Mishnah Garden: add horse manure to help next year's crops, all are welcome. Bagels and rubber gloves will be provided. |
Kabbalat Shabbat Chanukah |  Kabbalat Shabbat Chanukah! Friday night, December 19. Members and friends of all ages are warmly welcomed to come together to celebrate a light-filled holiday Shabbat. Please bring a chanukiyah (Chanukah menorah) and candles for a communal candle-lighting and songs, followed by Shabbat candles, Kiddush, Motzi and pot-luck dinner. Adat Shalomer and world renowned story-teller Noa Baum will share some special tales for Shabbat Chanukah. 6:30pm - Chanukah candle-lighting and holiday songs 6:50pm (ish) - Shabbat candle-lighting, Kiddush and motzi followed by Holiday/Shabbat potluck dinner Dessert and Story-telling with Noa Baum (for adults too!) |

Rabbi Katz is the Dean of Jewish Living at Leo Baeck Jewish Day School in Toronto, Canada and a world renown musician and teacher. We are thrilled to bring him to our home in Bethesda.
Throughout this Shabbaton we will learn new music, share old favorites and celebrate the crossing of the Red Sea with this wonderful scholar and musician.
