This past week and months have been painful for our brothers and sisters in Israel. We pray that Jews and Palestinians will work for peace and we say: shaalu shalom Yerushalayim (pray for the peace of Jerusalem).

In our community, Thanksgiving is our minds. It is our special time to "just be" with family and friends. Around the table laden with delectable treats, many families ask each other, "What is one thing for which you feel grateful?" I look forward to hearing your children's responses to this question.

Here is a link to fantastic Thanksgiving resources from Camp JRF staff: http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=4c3780a5d2f786d0ce67ebb11&id=a2834c9f07&e=38244e6104

In Torah School, we teach our students to recognize and acknowledge, to say todah rabah (thank you) for the good in their lives. We reinforce this value by reciting brachot (blessings to God) even during the simple act of sharing nishnush (snack). When a student is helpful, we offer a "hakarat hatov", positive reinforcement of his/her attitude and behavior.

In the sixth section of the Amidah, our time for reflection that we recite standing, we say, "Blessed are you The Gracious One, whose name is good and to whom all thanks are due. (p. 102). I am strengthened by this regular reminder to express gratitude for all the good in my life.

I am grateful to God for my children, Shoshana and Ari. I feel blessed to be able to spend Thanksgiving with Shoshana, her boyfriend Tim and Gordon cousins.

I also feel grateful to work with very talented and dedicated staff: Rabbi Fred, Hazzan Rachel, Judith, Kathy, Yolanda, Carlos, Alma, Anna, and Elisabeth I especially want to say "todah rabah" to Jen, our beloved Torah School assistant who is very creative and hardworking. We are blessed with very capable Torah School teachers who share their love of Judaism with our children. Each Board member and every volunteer make Adat Shalom a very special community. Todah rabah to every one of you who opened your heart and home to me. Praised are you. Gracious One, for this caring community.

PJ Library

The PJ Library is a free Jewish book and CD club that mails to your child a book or CD about every month.  It's geared to your child's age and is seasonal with a focus usually on the next Jewish holiday as well as Jewish themes and values.  It's been widely credited with creating a bounce in Jewish identity among young Jews in many communities where it's been running for years.  Speaking from personal experience, the books and CDs are generally very good and some are fantastic. Our kids love them!  And it's completely free!!!

Shabbat Matters -- Learning Styles and the Brain with Susan Gaeta - December 13th, 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM

Shabbat Matters continues on, December 13, with new teachings from Adat Shalom member Susan Gaeta.  Chochma (practical knowledge and wisdom), Binah (intuition, relationships), Da'at (experiential knowledge): all ways we use our brains to experience the world around us. Susan Gaeta will share with us some movements to activate the brain for learning, communicating and supporting our relationships.

We all, including our children, have our preferred styles of processing information.  Susan will present ideas based on The Dominance Factor by neurophysiologist, Carla Hannaford. Parents will be introduced to how knowing eye, ear, hand, foot and brain dominance can support learning and build more effective working relationships.

·        Todah rabah to Alan Brody for serving as one of our wonderful Teen Scene youth directors (with Rayza Goldsmith). We are very proud of him as he departs to volunteer for the year in Rwanda with the JDC (Joint Distribution Committee). The JDC is the world's leading Jewish humanitarian assistance organization. Kol Hakavod - we are proud of you  and l'hitraot - we look forward to seeing you upon your return.

Hebrew School Snacks

We know that it is challenging for children to start learning again at 4:30 pm after a full day of school. Here is a recommendation to help our children: feed them protein as it helps activate their learning abilities. We ask you to please bring cheese sticks, challah and juice when it is your family's turn to provide snack. If your child is lactose intolerant, also provide a peanut-free protein substitute for him/her. Todah rabah.

David Ehrenstein for leading Minyan Dor Chadash.

Fred Pinkney for guiding Kitah Hey's work in the Mishnah Garden.

Claude Kacser for sharing his story with our Kitah Zayin students. At 6 ½ years of age, from Paris, he was one of 1000 children who survived the Holocaust by being sent to safety in the USA.

Marilyn Price for serving as our artist-in-residence for students and staff development. She guided each one of us to find personal meaning in a Torah story. We are blessed to have her visit Adat Shalom, at no cost, due to the support of the Tri-Brainy Foundation.
