Get Ready for the Boating Season Ahead...
|
Prepare Your Boat & Review Your Coverage!
The temperature is finally rising and it's time to get your boat on the water. Make sure you perform these checks before you cast off to avoid preventable issues.
-
Oil Check
If you didn't change the oil and filter when you put your boat way in the fall, do it now. It's also a good idea to check the oil in the outdrive. -
Battery Inspection First, reconnect the battery and clean away any corrosion. If you have a traditional battery with vent caps, fill it up. Test with a battery tester.
-
Cooling System
Refill the cooling system, rinse out the strainer and check the hoses for cracks. -
Fuel System
Top off your tank if it isn't already full. Change the fuel filter and make sure the fuel line is attached. Check for cracks in the fuel line. -
Belts & Hoses
Check all belts and hoses for cracks and brittleness. Belts should be tight over the pulleys so they don't slip, which can also make them wear faster. A black soot-like substance near the pulley is a sign the belt is worn and needs to be replaced. -
Propeller and Hull Assessment
Check your propeller for dings or cracks, and make sure it's attached properly. Check rudders, shafts and boat trim.
-
Onboard Inspection
Test your horn and VHF radio. Inspect your life jackets and make sure that your fire extinguisher isn't expired. Make sure your anchor is on board. - Check the Manual
Make sure to read the owner's manual for any safety checks specific to your boat.
-
Keep It Covered
Even when you take every precaution, accidents can happen. Keep your boat protected with the proper insurance. As we mentioned here in February, the impact of Hurricane Sandy has brought some significant changes to marine coverage in the Northeast. As boaters ourselves, we understand the impact of these changes and urge you call us at 401-846-9629 for a policy review prior to launching your vessel this Spring. We're here to help you understand your options and obtain the best coverage for your boat!

THE NEWPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY
was chartered in 1854 to collect and preserve books, manuscripts, and objects pertaining to Newport's history. In 1884 the Society purchased the old Seventh Day Baptist Meeting House (1730). This was arguably their first real artifact, and certainly one of the first examples of adaptive reuse of an historic structure with deliberate homage to the structure's own integrity. The collections of the Newport Historical Society have continued to grow, and have, in fact, outgrown every structure provided for them within a decade or less of the groundbreaking. The result is one of the finest local historical society collections in New England.

Eco-Friendly Options for Your Vehicles & Home
For consumers and business owners committed to "going green," a wide range of insurance options are now available. Below are a few of the innovative, Eco-friendly products, services and discounts offered by many insurers.
VEHICLES:
Hybrid Discounts: some companies offer premium discounts of up to 10% for hybrid vehicles; similar discounts may also apply to hybrid-electric boats. Some policies also have optional endorsements to upgrade to similar model hybrid vehicles after a total loss.
Alternative Fuel Discounts: If your car uses an alternative energy source, such as biodiesel, electricity, natural gas, hydrogen or ethanol, you may be eligible for a discount on your premium.
Pay as You Drive (PAYD) Programs: Several insurers offer programs with a sensor in the car that tracks miles driven and speed. The information is used to reward policyholders who drive fewer miles than average by providing them with discounts.
HOME:
Efficiency & Sustainability Standards: Premium discounts may be available for those whose homes meet stringent standards, such as LEED certified homes.
Green Rebuild: Homeowners coverage that replaces/rebuilds after a loss with more Eco-friendly materials is often offered as an endorsement to a standard homeowners policy. Some companies will also pay homeowners extra if they replace old kilowatt-hungry appliances with Energy-Star devices.
Off the Grid: For homeowners who generate their own geothermal, solar or wind power and sell any surplus energy back to the local power grid, there are now policies that cover both the income lost when there is a power outage caused by a covered peril and the extra expense to the homeowner of temporarily buying electricity from other sources.
Call us at 401-846-9629 to discuss your green insurance options; we're always here to help!
