Hurricane Sandy: A Game Changer
  Hurricane Sandyfor Boat Owners Insurance

BoatUS, named Hurricane Sandy the "single largest industry loss since the Association started to keep records... damaging approximately 65,000 recreational boats with the estimated dollar loss topping $650,000 million.

Although comparatively speaking, our immediate area received just a "glancing blow" from Sandy; the impact will none-the-less be a lasting one for local boat owners. Going forward, the insurance industry is considering many changes to the way North East boat owners' policies will be written.

Boats Damaged by Hurricane Sandy Many of the anticipated policy changes may more closely resemble those in force along the hurricane-prone southern Atlantic and Gulf coasts. There, deductibles are 5% to 10% of hull value rather than the 1% to 2% common in our area. Other possible changes include:

  • Mandatory haul-out coverage to transport boats away from the storm's path.
  • Insurers and re-insurers may review "hull accumulations" in specific harbors or ZIP codes to limit the number of vessels insured in one area in order to cap their hurricane exposure.
  • Boat owners may be required to file hurricane preparedness documentation with their insurer listing the action steps they will take if a storm threatens.
  • Separate salvage coverage may be required to pay costs of removing boats swept inland by a storm.

As boaters ourselves, we understand the impact of coverage changes for our clients and are keeping a close eye on these issues as they develop. Rest assured, we will work through the changes together and suggest that you call us at 401-846-9629 for a policy review prior to launching your vessel this Spring, we're here to help!

Protect Your Home...

from Extreme Winter Weather

Frozen HouseAs the mercury dips dramatically throughout the New England winter, we count on our homes to protect us against storms and freezing temperatures. Periods of severe and sustained cold, snowstorms, melting and freezing can combine to cause considerable damage.

IciclesHere are a few steps to protect your home, so that it can continue to safeguard you from the season's worst:
  • Keep sidewalks and entrances free from snow and ice.
  • Watch for ice dams near gutter downspouts, these can cause water to build up and seep into your home.
  • Keep your house heated to a minimum of 65 degrees to prevent freezing pipes and identify the location of your main water shutoff in case you need to use it.
  • Open hot and cold water faucets to let them drip slowly, keeping water moving in the pipes prevents freezing.
  • If your garage is attached to your house, keep the doors closed.
  • If ice forms on tree limbs, watch for dead, damaged or dangerous branches that could break and fall under the extra weight, potentially damaging your home, car or a passerby.
  • If you use fireplaces, wood stoves and electric heaters, watch them closely to be sure that they are working properly, do not leave them unattended and close the fireplace flue, when not in use.
  • If away for an extended time, ask a neighbor to check on your house.

Standard homeowners policies cover most kinds of damage resulting from a freeze, but it's a good idea to be informed about your coverage before you need it. Call us at 401-846-9629 to review your homeowner's policy; we're always here to help!
