Celebrating Community
Community is not something I take for granted. When I think of community, I think of my MLC, my parish, my wider faith community, my neighborhood, the wider Dayton area, the country, the world. I try constantly to remember that we are all brothers and sisters created by the same God regardless of the different paths we take to honor our God. This is especially poignant with all the violence in the world. But that could be a whole separate newsletter!

Because we are interconnected in more ways than can be conveyed by the word Network, I appreciate that we are the Marianist Lay Community of North America. We are all one, members of a larger community, whether we are in a MLC, an Affiliate, or even possibly on our own because work/life has taken us away from our local Marianist roots. To experience who we are as a larger community, join us at next summer's assembly! Details will be coming soon!

Community life should also be lifted up and celebrated! 2016-2017 gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the bicentennials of our religious communities of sisters and brothers. But I'd like to also draw attention to the Visitation Marianist State Community (VMSC), celebrating 50 years as a vowed lay community. Members are from all over the country and have an enduring commitment to the Marianist charism, expressed in a vow of stability. In essence, members of the VMSC make a public commitment to live the Marianist charism for life. Their commitment extends far beyond their initial formation and above and beyond their life in a local or virtual MLC.

In addition to their local Marianist activities and professional lives, members of the VMSC have also been of service to the Marianist Family. Members of the VMSC were involved in the initial assemblies for lay Marianists, the creation of MLNNA (now MLC-NA), the International Organization of Marianist Lay Communities, the inter-generational retreat held in 2013, and more.

I consider members of the VMSC to be role models and leaders. I am inspired by their lifelong example of knowing, committing to, and living the Marianist charism. I am happy to count them as friends. I am privileged and blessed to call them my brothers and sisters in community.

The VMSC will be in attendance at the Changemakers event October 28-31 and will celebrate its 50th anniversary that weekend. As we congratulate the SM and FMI for their witness and ministry, please join me in also congratulating the VMSC!

MLC-NA Update
It may be the Summer Doldrums, but not at MLC-NA.  There are many things going on:  The census has started, we have elections coming up in 5-6 weeks, we will be rolling out the full Lay Marianist handbook.   And if that isn't enough, we are 1 year away from our Continental Assembly.

What are you and your community doing this Summer?  Take a picture and send it to us so we can include it in an upcoming edition of the e-News.  Waiting for something special?  You're special, your community is special, your gathering is special!  So take that picture and drop us a note - curious Marianist minds want to know what other communities are doing. Send us an email.
Election Update
Thank you to all the people who nominated candidates for our upcoming election. The nomination committee is contacting the nominees and will announce the slate of candidates and positions in August.  Elections will take place soon afterwards.   More information will be provided soon.
Census Update
The census has begun and our volunteers are calling Lay Marianists registered in our membership list.

Not sure if you are registered?   Send us an email with your information and we will check it against our membership list and let you know.

If you are interested in helping with this project, please contact Mallory Green at temporalities@mlnna.org.

This is part of our effort to create a new system that will allow members to register and update their own information.

2017 Continental Assembly

We're building a family-friendly program that will include Marianist-themed activities for children of all ages.
We hope everyone will consider participating in this fun and faith-filled weekend in Dayton on July 13 to 16, 2017.

We are looking for volunteers to help plan and to help during the assembly.  If you and/or your community would like to help, please email us by clicking here.

Let us know, when you are available and we will match you up with a project.
Community News
The Micah Marianist Lay Community in Dayton hosted dinner for incoming UD students who were part of UD's Callings program which exposes students to the heart and soul of the university community. Students participated in activities on and off campus including service projects and learning different prayer styles. Learning about the Marianist charism and meeting a variety of members of the program is a highlight of their experience!

St. Mary's Marianist Leadership Program is Looking for MLC's to Host Service Trips
In early fall, some students in the St. Mary's University Marianist Leadership Program (MLP) will be taking some immersion service trips around the country, specifically cities that have Marianist religious or lay people, for example: Honolulu, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dayton, St. Louis, and Philadelphia.  (How about your city?)

The goal of the service immersion trips is to broaden the students' perspective of the Marianist family & connect them with Lay and Religious Marianist.  It will also strengthen and better establish the students' Marianist Lay Community identity and mission.

If you and/or your community would like to support this program by hosting 4-5 students & 1 staff member for a 3-night, 4-day experience, please email Brian Buchmeyer.
