The Glory of God is the Human Person Fully Alive - St. Irenaeus
Here we are, in the midst of Lent AND in the Year of Mercy. Double Whammy! Pope Francis has had, and continues to have, a powerful impact on our world. Because of his leadership, I have been spending a lot of time this Lenten season considering the humanity of Jesus-the example he set when her was here and living out the Works of Mercy. I want to share a few Gospel passages that highlight that call to action through example...
Matthew 4:23- Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.
Matthew 8:2-3 and a leper came to Him and bowed down before Him, and said, "Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean." Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing; be cleansed." And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
Matthew 9:36- Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd.
Mark 14:22 While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is My body."
Luke 24:50-51 And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.
When I look to Jesus, I see very clearly how he experienced people. He was present to them. He taught, preached, journeyed, prayed, and ate. He stretched out, touched, and healed so many. He connected to others in such a simple, compassionate way.
As a person of faith, I know I am called to be like Christ...to live as Jesus lived in every way possible. When I get down to the core of my faith, I can come to see that the Incarnate God shows us how to maximize our humanity and to be in relationship with each other with mercy and God at the center. THAT is what being fully alive means to me.
I invite you, over these last few weeks of Lent, to be fully alive, like Jesus was fully alive. Embrace every moment and every person with patience, love, and mercy. Offer a greater quality of presence in every conversation and moment of silence. Allow this time to give glory to God... because, quite simply, the glory of God is the human person fully alive.

For 10 years the Harvest Women Marianist Community, founded by Marceta Reilly, has sponsored a retreat for the women of Hoyt, Kansas. Using this year's theme, Come Pray With Me, Chris Suriano and Joanne McCracken from the Marianist family Retreat Center in NJ helped the women to examine how and why we pray especially during the storms of life.
In addition for the first time this year, a night of Reflection on Ruth was presented to the Women's Bible Study of Christ The King Parish in Topeka, Kansas. Lots of good things happening in the Midwest!
