Year-End Facilities Update--
No Summer Access to Grandview, Hilltop
|
As another successful school year comes to a close, the Westonka School District enters the final phase of referendum bond projects approved by voters in November 2011. Major construction will take place at Grandview Middle School and at Hilltop Primary School this summer.

Mound Westonka Alumni Community--
Welcomes 163 New Members
|
In commemoration of a high school class that has "shared" more than any other, Mark Randklev delivered his "final post" to his classmates: "Thank you for the laughs, thank you for the unforgettable moments, thank you for not being afraid to be who you truly are. I hope your futures are as bright as you've made these last four years."
Amid pomp and circumstance, the Mound Westonka High School Class of 2014 graduated May 25 during the school's 96th Annual Commencement Ceremony. The event marked the culmination of years of hard work and dedication for the 163 graduating seniors.

Mound Westonka Grad Celebrates--
14 Years of Perfect Attendance
|
A Mound Westonka High School student graduated Sunday with an incredible "claim to fame": she never missed a day of school.
Class of 2014 graduate Sari Mailey's path to perfect attendance started in preschool and continued through 14 years of school in the Westonka School District.
"I did not set out to get perfect attendance but did not feel that I had a reason to miss school," Mailey explained.

Celebrity Chefs Prepare Lunch--
At Westonka Primary Schools

Students at both Hilltop and Shirley Hills primary schools enjoyed a special treat on May 22, when local "celebrity" chefs prepared their lunches.
Scott Bjorlin, co-owner of Scotty B's Restaurant in Mound, was the celebrity chef at Hilltop, where he prepared his homemade macaroni and cheese, served with a tasty garlic bread stick. Jake Hawley, executive chef of the Lafayette Club, came up with a menu featuring delicious turkey tacos for Shirley Hills.

MWHS Science Teacher Chosen--
To Conduct Summer Biophysics Research
|
Mound Westonka High School chemistry and physics teacher Sarah Morinville will be spending much of her summer vacation in the research lab. Morinville was selected for a six-week position at the University of Minnesota, where she will be one of four teachers participating in physics research.
"This is again a great example of Westonka staff bringing their 'real-world' experiences directly back into their classrooms for the benefit of all our students," MWHS Principal Keith Randklev said.

At Memorial Day Ceremony
|
Students from the Westonka School District participated in a local ceremony at the Gillespie Center in Mound on Memorial Day to honor the men and women, past and present, who have served our country in the military.

MWHS Students Celebrate--
Third Quarter Achievements
|
Celebration Day at Mound Westonka High School on May 21 was an occasion to honor students' achievements during the third quarter.
"Our celebrations assemblies have been really fun this year, as we continue to mold and shape this process," Assistant Principal Marty Fischer said. "Students and staff have enjoyed the changes while keeping with the spirit of rewarding positive behavior, good grades, perfect attendance and recognition that goes with being a positive contributor to MWHS pride!"

A Super Team Day--
At Shirley Hills
|
A field day is an end-of-year ritual for many primary school students, but the annual Super Team Day at Shirley Hills Primary School is special in that it emphasizes team and cooperative activities. This year's event, held on May 23, was a tremendous success.

Westonka Summer Food Service Program--
Offers Free Breakfast & Lunch for All Youth
|
Westonka Food and Nutrition Services will once again sponsor the U.S.D.A.'s Summer Food Service Program to provide FREE meals for youth ages 1 to 18 during the summer break. The program serves breakfast and lunch, Monday through Friday, June 9-Aug. 22 at Mound Westonka High School.

Sydney Elizabeth Neal, an eighth-grader at Mound Westonka High School, caught a 54-inch-long muskie while boating with her family on Lake Waconia.

White Hawks Singles Players--
Advance to State Tennis Tourney
Mound Westonka High School sent two doubles teams and two singles teams to compete in the Section 2A Individual Boys Tennis Tournament held last week. Senior Arend Turner and sophomore Luke Moorhead both advanced to compete in the state tournament June 5 and 6.

White Hawks Wrestlers--
Make Academic All-State Teams
The Mound Westonka High School wrestling team was one of only four teams in the state to have four athletes named to the top three Guillotine 2014 Academic All-State teams. MWHS juniors Sam Bennyhoff and Luke Schmalz and 2014 graduates Bryan Tierney, Ryder Schmidt and John Byers were all honored recently by the amateur wrestling website for their academic and wrestling successes.

White Hawks Fall in Sections--
Lose 4-0 to Mustangs
The MWHS baseball team ended its season in the section tournament May 23 with a 4-0 loss to Breck. The Mustangs scored three runs in the second inning and a final run in the third to solidify their victory over the White Hawks.
