FEBRUARY 23, 2016

Greetings!

In an earlier Celebrate Wellness introduction I invited folks who had a perspective on mental illness to inform me that I might understand this complicated condition more fully. I received some thoughtful responses:

Bill Manahan, MD, said:
I will not go into great detail, but I will throw out my opinion of why there is more mental illness now than in the past.  I suspect that it is the same reason that there is so much more chronic disease at this time.  And, Lynn, you pretty well summarized the reasons when you asked this question in your article:  Is it food and air pollution, societal stresses, our culture?  The answer is yes - to all of your reasons.

Joe Pizzorno, ND, is Editor of Integrative Medicine: A Clinician's Journal.  In the December 2015 edition, Dr. Pizzorno discussed the topic of why there is now so much chronic illness - of all kinds.  And, of course, chronic illness would include a vast majority of the mental illness that is occurring.  READ THE ENTIRE LETTER>>

I have a personal experience with mental illness. My maternal grandmother lived until she died in an asylum. She was put in it because she tried to kill my grandfather. She had 6 children, my mother was the oldest girl and the job of being mom fell to her. The youngest was so small he slept in a cradle. My mother told about the kids all rocking him to sleep.
My mothers best friend had a mentally ill mother as well. They had a lot of money and she was "kept" locked upstairs.

My mom, Zola, and Elsie ( her friend) formed a bond over this that lasted their entire lives. The stigma of mental illness was so strong that they really needed each other. Elsie was in the armed services and lived with a man her whole life. This wasn't very common in those days. They finally married when in their 60's. My mom couldn't get why they did that. Mental illness covers a spectrum of disorders from childhood related abuse to brain disease to DNA and everything in between. I believe we need to understand all the ramifications better and in more depth. Conditions of mental illness and their related off-spring are impacting our lives in ways we could not have imagined 50 years ago. Surely we can come up with some answers and some solutions to ameliorate the damage this causes in our world. We can fly to Mars, land on the moon, and a million other scientific accomplishments, why can't we deal with this medical/social problem more effectively?
