FEBRUARY 9, 2016

Greetings!

Maybe this "new age" is about stuff surfacing that has always lain below a certain line of propriety, acceptability, and what we believe to be true about ourselves. Take mental illness for example. Does it seem there is now more of it and more of it in extreme measure? I just don't remember knowing anyone in my growing up years that was mentally ill or perhaps they weren't identified that way. Yes, people had nervous breakdowns and then got over them. Or perhaps mental illness was so societally unacceptable that people were hidden away. We actually had insane asylums in the '50s and '60s--not that I'm advocating for a return of these institutions as abuse was rampant. My question is: Is there more mental illness today than in the past or is it now more socially acceptable to admit? If there is more mental illness today, what is the reason? Factors that alter brain chemistry such as food and air pollution, societal stresses, our culture?  I have many questions about this topic and no answers that feel complete. I value your thoughts on this topic.
