dorranceInterview with Dorrance Scholars: Independent Travelers

In our May newsletter we announced the arrival of students participating in the Dorrance Scholarship Summer Seminar, they have returned safely to the U.S. but before they left we made sure to take the opportunity to ask a group on the independent leg of their travels in Budapest about their exciting experiences in Turkey, Italy, and Hungary.

We owe a big thanks to local student Anna Szelnyi who caught up with the group and conducted the following interview:

Italy, Turkey and Hungary. All of these destinations can be considered quite different from each other; one just has to think of the language, customs, religion, etc. What were your initial expectations about these places, before actually seeing them for yourselves?

EUGENIA FOWLKES: Initial thoughts on my travel plans were that they would look exactly how they are portrayed in the movies or TV in general. Turkey, I thought, would look very Middle Eastern, but it had a lot of European influence. I thought Italy would be calm and romantic, but it was a very hectic city. And Hungary? Well, I didn't know what to expect here. I guess I thought it would be very European. Which it is, but it has its own flavor. It has changed my view on what I deem to be European. And now I know not to over-generalize a country.

ROBERT DAVIS: I expected Turkey to be a very conservative and traditional place. In Italy I thought there were going to be a lot of trees, beautiful architecture, and good food. I didn't know what to expect in Hungary, because I have never heard of Budapest before this trip.

Yes, Hungary is unfortunately not as well known as the two other destinations, however, what is in common in all of the three countries is that they all drew the media's attention in the past few weeks as there were protests in Istanbul, a strike started at the Italian airport and Hungary was struggling to keep one of the biggest floods of the Danube under control. How did you feel about being able to get first-hand experience of these happenings?

ASHLEY GRADILLAS: We were very fortunate to have experienced such significant events in all three of the countries that we have visited, because we were able to gain a better understanding of the people in these countries through their struggles, unity and progression as a society. It has brought a whole new appreciation for my own society. We were a part of history.
