Report from U.S. Olympic Table Tennis Trials
Issue 368 featured Bill Guilfoil, a Kansas City role model with 93 years' experience on this planet who was on his way to Greensboro, NC to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Table Tennis Team that will represent us in Rio. Bill played well and had fun. Not making the team has not discouraged him. He has seen the many changes in Table Tennis and I'm sure has respect for the discipline and dedication of his much younger opponents who practice a minimum of 5 hours a day.
Relaxed, Consistent, Non-forceful
I invite you to watch this 2 minute YouTube video (Click Here). You'll see that Bill doesn't try to over power, slam, or be fancy. He is consistent and relaxed. His opponents often get frustrated and worn out.
The Big Picture
A few years ago, I hired Bill Guilfoil (who is also a Tennis coach) to help me with my serve. I told him that my toss was erratic and inconsistent. It was either too far left, too far right, too far behind me, or too far in front of me. Consequently, my first serve usually hit the net or was out of bounds. That forced me into my second serve, which looked more like slow pitch softball. My opponents taunted me with "serve me that lollipop again". Needless to say, I seldom won any games on my serve. I fully expected Bill to observe and coach me on my toss and serve. Instead, he said he didn't want to see my toss or my serve just yet. He asked me to walk with him around the perimeter of the area where the ball had to land in the opponent's court to put the ball in play. I thought this was a strange request. As I walked around, he said "John, this space is 21 by 13.5 feet. That totals 283.5 square feet. It's huge, isn't it? I know I can teach you to get this little ball into that huge area. Don't make it so difficult."

Did this make an impact on me? Well, it happened over 25 years ago and I still remember each word and how it built my confidence and taught me a life lesson on seeing the Big Picture.
Exercise
This week I invite you to reflect on the following in your business and/or personal life.

1. Would being more relaxed sometimes be helpful to reach your goal?

2. In what ways could you be more consistent?

3. Are you making something difficult? Does it have to be?

4. Are you slowed down by detail or over worrying? Can you see the big picture? Can you see that it's like the 283.5 square feet?

As a business/life coach I am trained to help you see the big picture and help you get there. Just give me a call 816-213-0125 or email and we can visit.
