Collier's Garden Scoop
September 2014
Happy we who can bask in this warm
September sun, which illumines all creatures,
as well when they rest as when they toil...
~Henry David Thoreau

The deep, fiery colors of Magellan zinnias & croton hint of the autumn season to come.

September's arrival promises

that fall is just around the corner! The first half of the month will see the nursery filling with fresh plants to rejuvenate tired containers & flowerbeds for autumn. Discover some of our favorites for the early September garden in this email. We'll have our best selection of mums during this month as well. As soon as temperatures drop into the low 80s consistently, we will start to receive cool-weather favorites such as snapdragons, pansies & violas, so look forward to those later in September.

Also, don't miss out on the coupon this month- you can find it at the end of the email.

See you at the nursery!

End of Summer

PERENNIAL SALE

Beginning Tuesday, September 2nd

50% Off!

The majority* of our 4 inch, quart & gallon perennials

will be half price, while supplies last.

Herbaceous perennials go dormant (die back) in winter,

but planting them in the fall allows their roots to become

well established during the cold months,

resulting in hardier plants and more vigorous growth

& blooms next spring and summer.

*exclusions: evergreen perennials

(plants that maintain their foliage through winter).

what to plant now to freshen up outdoor spaces
& get you through to pansy-planting time...

COSMOS

Tall-growing, heavy bloomer that attracts butterflies. Full or partial sun. Plant in groups of 3 or more in flowerbeds,

or use in containers as a height accent.

 CROTON
Colorful foliage can be used to brighten up covered porches or bright indoor rooms. Shade, partial sun or bright light. Don't overwater.

MARIGOLDS

Will take a light frost, so these are one of the best options for blooms now all the way into late fall. Full or partial sun and regular water. Read more about marigolds here.

ORNAMENTAL PEPPERS

The perfect accent to fall plantings and table arrangements, with some varieties sporting peppers in 2 or 3 different colors at once.

Very bright light to partial sun.

PETUNIAS

Another option that will tolerate a light frost and so will last long into fall. Pictured here is a trailing variety called African Sunset. Full or partial sun. Regular water &

well-drained soil.

ZINNIAS

Warm, bright blooms in perfect shades for fall. We have 8 & 10 inch pots that are ideal for popping into your existing containers for a 'quick fix' of color. Full or partial sun and consistent water.

Our burlap bags are a quick & inexpensive way to 'dress-up' mums for parties or gifts.
first mums of the fall season have arrived!

Revive tired containers on porches, patios and near entryways with
fresh & seasonal garden mums. Available in shades of yellow, orange, red & purple, as well as white. When budded and just 'cracking' color, like the one pictured here, mums will bloom for 4 or 5 weeks. Plant now and replace in October with another mum or pansies. Mums prefer at least 3 hours of direct sun each day and will tolerate 6 to 8 if watered regularly. They are perennial when planted in the ground!
young cauliflower plants
cool-season veggies
arriving late this week

Fall vegetables including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage & cauliflower are expected to arrive on Friday of this week. These young transplants give you

a head start on harvesting (no need to wait on seeds to germinate). Plant in early September for harvest in 60 to 100 days, depending on type. Veggies need

4 hours or more direct sun each day. While temperatures are still in the 80s and 90s, these cool-season veggies would appreciate some afternoon shade and extra water to survive until temperatures drop.

our top vine & shrub picks right now

CONFEDERATE JASMINE

Favored for its fragrant blooms that appear in spring and fall. We have some very full & healthy specimens in stock! Vigorous but non-invasive habit and evergreen foliage are two more reasons to love this vine.

PINKY WINKY HYDRANGEA

Large, cone-shaped blooms are bright white now but will fade to pink during fall. Sun-loving hydrangeas like this one and Limelight (also in stock) provide flowers for the late summer garden.
