Uncommon Beauty: Marigolds
marigold bloom
Marigolds may seem a bit common to us, simply because we are so familiar with them, but really, there's no such thing as a "common" plant, as each one is spectacular in it's own right. Take a look at this marigold bloom, for example. Waves of curled petals, layered over each other so delicately, make it plan why these flowers have been cherished for centuries in gardens the world around. The name "marigold" comes from "Mary's gold," as these blooms are used to decorate altars in honor of the Virgin Mary.
The two most commonly found marigolds, French & African (Tagetes patula and T. erecta), actually both originated in Central and South America, and were brought to Europe by Spanish explorers. The Aztecs considered them magical, and used them to cure hiccups and the effects of being struck by lightning.  The flowers are sometimes used as a cheap substitute for saffron to color foods, and the roots of the plant exude thiophenes, which kill nematodes!
Plant marigolds in containers or flowerbeds that receive full or partial sun. They will bloom profusely, if dead-headed, well into the fall, and will tolerate a light frost (28 degrees for several hours). Marigold flowers are actually edible, and would make a stunning garnish for fall soups and salads.
Perennial Autumn Blooms
Asters and chrysanthemums are perennial when planted in the ground! Site in full or partial sun. Both will emerge and bloom in the spring, and if trimmed back, again in summer and fall.

September Marks the Start of
Camellia Season
camellia selection
Camellias have begun to arrive for fall planting. No blooms yet, but most are covered in buds! During fall and winter we have our best selection of this southern favorite. Camellias bloom in shades of white, pink and red starting in fall through late winter. They thrive in partial sun, with some afternoon shade. Add camellias to your landscape for extremely showy blooms when most of the landscape lies dormant.
