Message from Michael Karangelen, SAF President

Alumni & Friends,

Scott Belsky ('02) recently tweeted something that hit home: Experiential Learning > Experience > Learning.  Student Agencies Foundation's (SAF) Mission is to create the means for Cornell students to gain profound experiential learning in starting and running businesses. Student Agencies, Inc. provides students a tremendous opportunity to gain practical executive-level experience at operating a business. eLab, the Cornell business incubator, provides students the support and resources they needs as they prepare to launch their own businesses.  As we move forward into the future with eHub - the opportunities of experiential learning for Cornell students will only continue to grow.

Upcoming Event:

Many of us will be heading back to campus on April 18-19 for E@C's Celebration to attend the panels/networking events...and to support our eLab students.  I hope to see you there!

In this issue:
  • John Jaquette, a member of both the Student Agencies, Inc. and eLab Boards of Directors, will be retiring from his long-held position as Director of Entrepeneurship@Cornell this summer.  John has been a very strong advocate for students and a wonderful partner for Student Agencies Foundation.  Read John's article to learn more about the work he has done over the last 15 years and how we are honoring him.
  • Read the first edition in our new Alumni Start-up Series which will showcase alumni who have taken the traditional entrepreneurial path. We are featuring a young alumni of SAI, Gabriel Corredor ('05) and his new venture Artissano.
  • Starting this edition and over the next few months, we will be featuring members of our on-campus young alumni.  They are entering the workforce in two capacities: their first internship or full-time position.  We are featuring them for several reasons: 1) We are very proud of them and want to say - congratulations! 2) You may be working for the same company - this is an easy first step to build stronger connections for our alumni 3) If you like this feature, we can look to expand it for other portions of our alumni (when you are moving to a new area, new company etc...)
  • We also have a quick follow-up to last month's alumni Spotlight. Your response to Peter Nolan's ('80, MBA '82) article was overwhelming, thank you!  John McCarthy ('79, MBA '85) sent in a copy of the 1980 Ithaca Times article that Peter referenced and we wanted to share it with you.  Look for more Alumni Spotlights in future editions...

Your feedback is always welcome! (Easiest way to be heard...just hit reply to this email and give us your comments, article suggestions, news and updates!)

Sincerely,

Michael Karangelen '90

John Jaquette Honored by SAF Trustees

John Jaquette is the director of Entrepreneurship@Cornell. He has been a member of the extended Student Agencies family for the past 15 years, serving as a member on both the SAI Board of Directors and the eLab Board of Directors.

In October 2012, at the NYC Summit, John announced that he would be retiring from  Cornell in the summer of 2013.

Throughout his tenure at Cornell, John has been an enthusiastic advocate for students and alumni and a strong partner to Student Agencies. He has been a mentor to countless SAI students and worked to provide more entrepreneurial opportunities for all Cornell students. "It was clear from my first day on the job that Cornell students and alumni were very entrepreneurial," Jaquette said. And he added that "over the years both academic and experiential learning opportunities have begun to catch up with demand."

John's leadership at E@C and successful partnership with SAF helped build some of those experiential learning opportunities, specifically, the creation of eLab (the business incubator for Cornell students) and a student-driven entrepreneurial community space (PopShop.)

Student Agencies Foundation Membership is given to a very limited number of individuals. In February 2013, the Trustees unanimously voted to extend Foundation Membership to John based on his years of dedicated service and extraordinary support of the SAF Mission.

Say congratulations to him directly!

Gabriel, DK and other SAI alumni

We recently sat down with Gabriel Corredor ('05) for a quick Q&A; Gabriel was SAI President in 2004 and SAI Research Group Manager in 2002 - 2003.  He recently launched Artissano.com, a curated marketplace showcasing the work of fashion designers from around the world. Prior to that, Corredor launched TopspinLogistics.com and worked for six years on Wall Street in Investment Banking.

What set of skills developed at SAI did you find particularly useful post-college and in your current venture?

SAI was an incredible experience that gave me exposure to managing a team(s) of people, allowed me to develop and continue honing my planning, communication and analytical skills, and ultimately planted the entrepreneurial seed in me. It gave me the satisfaction of taking the role of driving a task, as all managers do, and learning from my mistakes/ celebrating my wins all while in a nurturing professional environment. Interestingly, there were things I learned at SAI that didn't come to the surface until I entered the corporate environment. As a manager, the learning curve is steep amidst the broad exposure to the various aspects of a business (operations, finance, human resources, sales, etc.), and you end up learning far more than you realize.

On-Campus Young Alumni - Next Steps

Over the next few months, we will be featuring members of our on-campus young alumni. They are getting ready to enter the workforce for their internships or full time positions (upon graduation.)  We are very, very proud of each of these young alums and want to give them a moment to shine!

Ken-Ji has accepted a summer internship as a Sales and Trading Analyst for Barclay's Capital.
Major: Economics
He served as BRSS GM (2012 Team)

Michelle Gelshteyn ('13)
Michelle has accepted a full time position with UBS (NYC) as an Investment Banking Analyst.
Major: Economics/Real Estate
She currently serves as the Sales/Marketing Manager for the Cornellian Yearbook.

Adam Cherubini ('13)
Adam has accepted a full time position with Deutsche Bank (NYC) as an Analyst in their Global Transaction Banking Group.
Major: Applied Economics & Management (AEM)
He serving as BRSS GM and Business Manger for the Cornellian during his tenure from 2010-2012.

We've added their LinkedIn profiles for quick, easy reference; however, we are happy to provide an introduction through our Alumni Program Manager.

Follow-up to last month's Alumni Spotlight article:

John McCartney ('79, MBA '85) sent us a nice follow-up to Peter Nolan's article that ran in our Feb eNewsletter and we wanted to share it with you:

Hi Student Agencies,

Enclosed is the "Ithaca Times" article about the 1980 Cap & Gown issue with Pete Nolan & I on the front of it. Peter was right - in your recent feature - that during '79-'80 we faced many challenges. In addition to the "Tassle Hassle" other highlights included:
  • evicting Mugsy's Cafe at 415
  • installing Oliver's Deli
  • building the extra bedrooms & fire escapes on the back of 411-415
  • and flooding Rulloff's basement twice in the process
Back then, we worked hard & played hard. We all appreciated the opportunities offered by SAI and we were committed to its success. Pete Nolan (as well as Tommy Sprague ('79) and Mike Bachich ('78)) were great friends and while we all squabbled - when it came down to it we all had each others back and the best interest of SAI at heart.

One of my best memories of running SAI with Pete was a snowy day when we decided to clean out the attic of 415 [if you want to know more on this story - you have to come to Ithaca and find out...]

Best,
John
