Student Agencies Foundation eNewsletter
|
Message from Michael Karangelen, SAF President
Alumni & Friends,
The response to the January launch of our new monthly eNewsletter has been very positive. Each of you who have taken the time to send your feedback to Angelle, myself or via our survey link, it is appreciated. We will continue to add more direct Alumni communication, through articles and columns written to highlight you and your businesses. We've added a quick link in the "Alumni in the News" section for you to send us updates. Please also send us your pictures. We love them! In this issue: - You will meet the 2013 eLab Student Teams.
- Daniel Cohen, Director of eLab, will share more on the eLab Demo Day, where the eLab Teams will be featured center stage during the E@C Celebration this April.
- Our Alumni Spotlight, features Peter Nolan ('80, MBA '82) who served as Refrigerator Rental Agency Manager, CFO and President of Student Agencies, Inc during his tenure at Cornell. He is currently managing partner at Leonard Green & Partners. Since graduation, Peter has been a very active and dedicated alumnus. He serves as a Trustee for Cornell University and is a member of the Investment Committee for its endowment. Peter will be sharing his Student Agencies experiences from the late 1970's/early 1980's, in his own words. Be sure to read his article.
In the coming months, we will be sharing updates on these exciting ventures: - eHub - Beginning in 2014, eHub will be the place where Cornell students will gather to DO entrepreneurship. It will be a vibrant, applied business and entrepreneurship community where students, faculty and practitioners mingle, share ideas, collaborate on startups, advance existing businesses, and learn practical lessons about business, entrepreneurship and life...in short, the "center of gravity" for Cornell's entrepreneurial activity in Ithaca, NY.
- PopShop, a 24/7 Pop IN space for entrepreneurial-minded students (and others) gained traction within the Cornell community as a destination. Their FaceBook and webpage are listed under the VIP webpage section. Popshop is student-driven with support from eLab, (Student Agencies Foundation) and E@C.
Sincerely, Michael Karangelen '90 President Student Agencies Foundation, Inc |

SAF Alumni Spotlight - Peter Nolan ('80, '82) in his own words:
Student Agencies in the late 70's early 80's
 | 1980 Cornellian |
"I first joined Cornell Student Agencies as a refrigerator salesman during orientation. I guess its because I actually showed up for work for three days in a row (it was the 70's after all) that Tom Sprague ('79) and Mike Bachich ('78) approached me about becoming the manager of a new venture called Pronto Pizza. The notion was to deliver pizzas out of the Vineyard Restaurant at 409 College ave. Long story short...it was a disaster...."

Cornell's eClips has an interview with Peter discussing his time with Student Agencies and his career path after leaving SAI and Cornell. Click here to view.

Student Agencies -- The late 70's | early 80's
While researching our spotlight article, it became apparent that Student Agencies and the Cornell campus was a good place to be - members of the 1979-1980 team stated "Good Times" or "Good Memories" when asked about their experience. Two members of the Student Agencies Family mentioned in Peter Nolan's article offered personal recollections: David Gordon ('82), worked at Student Agencies in the early 1980's and is currently with Latham & Watkins LLP, stated "While it would be fun to tell stories about Peter that he would prefer not be told, I will go the more honorable route and simply say that Peter has been a remarkable leader since I have known him. He invests in others, sets reasonable and demanding standards, leads by example, and sets a tone in the workplace that is educational, enjoyable, performance-based, rigorous and just simply quite satisfying. A tough balance, indeed. I am extremely privileged to have learned at Peter's hip at Student Agencies and to have stayed connected with him both personally and professionally since our days at SAI." Thomas Sprague ('79), was an intrical member of the SA family in the mid-late 1970's, former SAI President stated "While his 3 days in a row as a fridgie salesman did set a record at the time, Peter is being somewhat modest about his initial days at SAI. It was pretty clear to those of us running SAI at the time that Peter had a special business sense, and so we wanted to move quickly to get him involved in running an agency. Rewarding him by giving him a start-up agency in a hyper-competitive business in which we had no experience was but one of our many questionable decisions. And by the way, Pronto Pizza didn't fail because of management, the main problem was that the pizza wasn't very good! But for some reason Peter chose to stick with us and went on to be a very successful part of SAI's history."
