EVERYDAY HEROES

For Linh Nguyen, being an on call employee within one of Youth Homes' residential programs was the perfect opportunity to get her feet wet while finishing up her bachelor's degree in psychology. Being on call was often difficult because the kids would ask "when are you coming back" and with finals and mid-terms, Linh found that she missed what was happening in their lives. After earning her bachelor's degree in psychology, Linh was invited to work within the FFA Program. This program allowed Linh to be more involved in the treatment plan and overall outcome of each child and seemed to be a perfect fit. Now over five years later and a full time employee in Youth Homes Foster Family Agency Program, working one-on-one with foster youth suits her well.

Working hands on with foster youth and being immersed in the many trainings that Youth Homes provides, has armed Linh with the tools
needed in assisting children in the foster care system. More importantly, it is obvious that Linh cares about the work she does with children and enjoys working with their families, teachers and social workers within the community. With a much broader understanding of the challenges facing these children, Linh helps them learn how to deal with disappointment and rejection, providing the tools they need to grow into healthy young adults.

Working with troubled youth is often times challenging but the rewards are huge. Linh knows that one day these kids will be adults and she has the faith and forethought in knowing that her work will one day help them become thriving community members.

Linh's favorite YH moment was when a three year old male client was adopted. Today, he is now 7 years old, doing very well in school and very bright. Read Sam's success story here. Although the adoptive parents were first time adopters, it was obvious they were thrilled and would do everything in their power to be the best parents they could be.
Linh says: "these kids just need to know that someone truly cares about their progress. Knowing that the counselors don't have alternative motives creates trust and allows them to begin opening up."

Congratulations Linh! You are making a difference in the lives of the foster children we serve!

COMMUNITY GIVING
CommunityGiving

As you can imagine, life gets pretty busy in a group home filled with teenagers so Youth Homes was thrilled to host a volunteer workday for  The National Charity League of Walnut Creek.  With a goal near and dear to the heart of YH of fostering mother-daughter relationships, the NCL is doing outstanding work in the community.

On August 15th, a group of mothers and daughters arrived at Cherry Lane in Lafayette ready to volunteer. This included a thorough deep clean of the kitchen, bathrooms, disinfecting and organizing communal areas and other common areas, as well as the organization of shelves in the kitchen and more.  One of the things Youth Homes can accomplish in working with the community in this way is to ensure we are always providing a clean, organized and safe environment for the youth in our care.
A very special thanks to Mary Fehrnstrom, Vice President of Philanthropy for the newly formed chapter of the National Charity League in Walnut Creek and of all the mothers and daughters that came out and worked so hard to show how much they care!

BOY SCOUTS DONATIONS DRIVE

Youth Homes has been quite fortunate throughout the years in receiving service from the local Boy Scouts of America. The most recent example of this was from Nicholai (Nico) Martinsen.

Nico wanted to finish his Eagle Scout project this year by completing a back to school drive to collect school supplies and back packs for the foster youth in our care.  With help from his scout team, family and community, Nico was able to collect over 45 backpacks filled with school supplies!

A big thank you to Nico, (pictured right) his Boy Scout troupe, and his family for doing such wonderful work in the community

Congratulations in completing your Eagle Scout project.
Youth Homes gives you an AAA+!

 YOUTH HOMES ACHIEVES COA ACCREDITATION

 DirectorNote

I am delighted to inform you that Youth Homes has achieved accreditation through the Council on Accreditation (COA). As a valued contributor to our organization, we wanted to share the immense value that COA accreditation will add to all aspects of our operations. Accreditation will maximize your support through accountability and improvement measures while increasing our capacity to continue delivering high-quality services.

Founded in 1977, COA is an independent, not-for-profit organization that partners with human service organizations worldwide to improve service delivery outcomes by developing, applying, and promoting appropriate best practice standards. COA Standards reflect current best practices in the field as determined through extensive literature reviews and a rigorous, multi-stage development and vetting process.

Although the formal accreditation process has been completed, our work is far from over; COA accreditation is not an end in and of itself. Rather, it is a process by which our organization can consistently strive for and achieve new levels of excellence.

Remember, your gifts do make a difference in the lives of the foster youth we serve therefore your continued support allows us to better serve our mission.

Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
Stu Sig
