5 steps to improve IQ
Step 1: Body and Mind Health
In the last couple of weeks, I have been showing you that the brain can change using examples and statistics. Having been in the business for 14 years, I have seen people's lives change and improve. The world understands that neuroplasticity exists; we have seen Gabby Giffords and Bob Woodruff improve after traumatic brain injuries. For more on their stories and others, go back and read the last newsletter, it can be found at http://www.pyramidofpotential.com/read-newsletters/

But the biggest question is how?

The first step is to improve body and mind health.

Nutrition
Early September, I wrote about body health, specifically nutrition. This can be very difficult for families, as it would require giving up the tastiest foods which are also the worst for our brains: sugary and starchy foods.

Exercise
Another way to improve body health is exercise. I recently found research that says 15 minutes a day of walking is enough. That's not too difficult to add in.

Sleep
Sleep is so important - good solid uninterrupted-by-cell-phone sleep.
"Effects of sleep loss on children

Selected statistics from research studies into sleep loss and its effects on children and teenagers include:
Sleep loss causes a range of schooling problems, including naughtiness and poor concentration.
Chronically sleep-deprived teenagers are more likely to have problems with impulse control, which leads to risk-taking behaviours.
Sleep problems in teenagers are associated with increased risk of disorders such as depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
High school students who regularly score C, D or F in school tests and assignments get, on average, half an hour less sleep per night than high school students who regularly get A and B grades.
Later start times at school result in reduced daytime sleepiness, higher grades and reduced negative feelings."

Mind Health; Stress
Mind health includes stress, depression and anxiety. Anyone who is very stressed cannot think as well as someone who is calm and relaxed. Yet at school, the number one stressor is test-taking. This article shows the research into stress and its effect on academic performance. So, if the number one stressor is school is test-taking, then test scores would go up if either there were less tests, or at least less importance placed on those tests.

Some ways to reduce stress before tests: have everyone run around the room, or play music and let them dance. Remind them that this is not a huge deal (even if you think it is). You stay calm, and your students will stay calm.

This goes for all ages too. Stress, depression and anxiety can cause fatigue, headaches and disease, according to the American Psychological Association.

Improve mind health by exercising, deep breathing, yoga, stretching, meditation and biofeedback. Make lists, say no, simplify your life. And take time to enjoy your life through hobbies, sports and social events.

By taking action like those suggestions above, your brain will thank you!

Next week I will be giving you an overview of brain development through the first year of life, the primitive reflexes. Meanwhile, enjoy!!
