Hi All!

For most of you this is the beginning of a new school year. Congratulations! This could be the best year ever! We sit on the cusp of new potential - for you, your children, your students, your clients. So, as this is a new beginning, today I shall start at the beginning - the foundation of the Pyramid of Potential.

If you would like to help someone improve their brain or you would like to improve your own, please take a look at www.brainadvancementteam.com. We start training on October 1. I'd love to get to know you while we work hard training our own brains in preparation for training others!!

Thank you so much! Kathy
Body Health

At the base of the Pyramid is body health - the health of the cells in our body and our brain. This is affected by things such as exercise, sleep and nutrition. Today I focus on what we put in our mouths that affects our bodies and, most importantly, our brains.

Over the summer I read Grain Brain by David Perlmutter, MD, neurologist. I thought I ate pretty healthy, but found surprising research about the effects of grains, sugar and other carbohydrates on our brains. I have been gluten free, dairy free and egg free for years while taking certain supplements to alleviate the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue. My doctor has also said to eliminate sugar, but hey - I felt I didn't have to be perfect, and I love dark chocolate, rice and lemonade, so I didn't. My body is where I saw what I would rather not - I was gaining extra weight around the middle despite eating healthy and exercising lightly.

For the last few weeks I have been following the advice in the book, and noticed feeling better and seeing much of that extra body fat melt.

I don't notice a huge difference in my brain. After all, I do the exercises from the Maintaining Brains Everyday DVD every day!

The first half of the book is dedicated to educating you about what carbs are, what is gluten, gluten sensitivity vs. celiac disease, inflammation and brain disease, and much more. Absolutely everything he writes about is backed by research that is included.

Giving up carbs is hard for most people. When I went gluten free, it took me three tries because I couldn't feel the negative affects right after eating it. Meanwhile, the gluten was working against me, and within a couple of months I would feel depressed and not as sharp as I like to feel. Finally, the third time I gave it up was the last time, and that was over 5 years ago. I will never go back.

Self-Assessment
This is from page 16 and 17 from the book. Answer True or False and keep your score:

     1.     I eat bread.

     2.     I drink juice.

     3.     I have more than 1 serving of fruit a day.

     4.     I choose agave over sugar.

     5.     I get out of breath on my daily walk.

     6.     My cholesterol is below 150.

     7.     I have diabetes.

     8.     I am overweight.

     9.     I eat rice or pasta.

    10.    I drink milk.

    11.    I don't exercises regularly.

    12.    Neurological conditions run in my family.

    13.    I don't take a vitamin D supplement.

    14.    I eat a low-fat diet.

    15.    I take a statin.

    16.    I avoid high-cholesterol foods.

    17.    I drink soda.

    18.    I don't drink wine.

    19.    I drink beer.

    20.    I eat cereal.

According to Dr. Perlmutter, the more Trues you scored, the higher your risk for neurological ailments. If you scored more than 10, he says you are in the hazard zone, and I think you need to read the book!

A Recipe
I have made this soup with variations and everyone loves it! It is very filling and has very few carbs. It's my new standby so that I don't get tempted by other food that is not permitted for a healthy brain.

Vegetable-Nut Soup
The amounts are approximate

2 cloves garlic
½ diced onion
1 Tbsp coconut oil
Sautee these until onions are translucent
2 cups vegetable - carrot, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, other
Sautee in same pan until tender
1 cup mixed unsalted nuts (no peanuts)
1 cup almond or coconut milk
Place all ingredients in blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Heat soup to desired temperature and serve.

Enjoy knowing that you are providing your brain with the fats it needs without the carbs that destroy it.
Happy eating!!
