Wyoming County Presents Clean Water Farm Award to Farming Operation

Pictured are (left to right): Ed Patchcoski (NRCS), Maureen Manning (WCCD Agricultural Technican), Richard Kobylski (award recipient), John Kobylski (award recipient), Pete Tarby (PA DEP) and Bob Robinson (WCCD District Chairman). Photo provided by WCCD.

The Clean Water Farm Award recognizes PA farmers with operations within the Susquehanna & Potomac River Basins, whose farm management practices result in improved local & downstream water quality.

The award winners for the North East Region are Rick and John Kobylski from Wyoming County. The award was presented to the Kobylskis at the Wyoming County Conservation District (WCCD) on July 14th during the district board meeting.

Financial support for this award is provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection through the Chesapeake Bay Regulatory and Accountability Program and the Pennsylvania Chesapeake Bay Education Office (administered by the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts, Inc.).

Berks County Conservation District and the Berks County Prison: A Winning Partnership

A rain barrel program has become one of the many tools that Pennsylvania's Conservation Districts have developed to help municipalities manage storm water runoff. Finding appropriate food grade containers to make those barrels, however, can be a challenge. When Berks County Conservation District sought to develop their program, it came to their attention that the local prison had an abundance of these containers that the manufacturer would not accept for return once emptied.

Berks CD has now established a partnership with the Berks County prison. The district provides the money for the hardware and the paint (they offer the barrels in white, blue and green) and the prison inmates then assemble the barrels. When there is an order or a rain barrel workshop planned, the district contacts the prison. The prison's inmates then paint and construct the rain barrels. The district orders the barrels when needed.

The district anticipates the relationship with the Berks County prison continuing. Watershed coordinator Kate Keppen said, "I'm excited about a new rain barrel ordinance passed by the city of Reading, located in Berks County. The new ordinance seeks to promote and establish guidelines for rain barrel use in the city and prevent or limit the possibility of the rain barrels representing a standing water code violation. In response, our district has been conducting an increased number of rain barrel workshops with the rain barrels constructed by the Berks County Prison. This program is definitely a win for our community and the environment."

Senator Yaw Lends Support to Lycoming County Field Day

Lycoming County Conservation District held a field day on July 24 at T.A. Seeds near Jersey Shore, PA. Senator Gene Yaw spoke during the event.

"The field day was an opportunity for farmers to learn how they can save money on input costs, improve the quality of their soil, and in turn reduce sediment and nutrient losses to our local watersheds," said Tim Heyler, Agricultural Conservation Technician.

The agenda included presentations on Making a Successful Transition to No-Till, Cover Cropping for the 21st Century, and No-till Equipment Setup. Also, a tour of the seed processing facility and cover crop demonstration plots were held.

EPA Logo Financial and other support for this project is provided by the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts, Inc. (PACD) through a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act, administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Pennsylvania NRCS Receives Funds to Rehab Dams

Communities across Pennsylvania will benefit from a $11.4 million investment in technical and financial assistance to rehabilitate dams that provide critical infrastructure and protect public health and safety.

"These structures play a critical role in flood prevention, water supply, and recreational opportunities," said Denise Coleman, NRCS State Conservationist. "This investment will protect people and ensure that these critical structures continue to provide benefits for future generations."

From the 1960s through the 1990s, local communities using NRCS assistance constructed more than 85 dams throughout the Commonwealth. These watershed management projects have primarily reduced flooding, protecting lives and property throughout the Commonwealth.

Nine dams in Pennsylvania will receive rehabilitation assistance for planning, design or construction through NRCS' Watershed Rehabilitation Program.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has declared August 3 through 9, 2014, "National Farmers Market Week". Throughout the week, USDA will celebrate our nation's thousands of farmers markets, farmers who make them possible and the communities that host them.

The declaration was made via an official proclamation
