Districts Reach over 3,500 through NPS Mini-grant Program

The 2013-2014 round of Nonpoint Source Pollution (NPS) Prevention Educational Mini-Grant Program for Conservation Districts concluded in May. Here are some of the outcomes:

  • Projects Conducted: 22
  • People reached in target audiences: 3,590
  • Workshops/educational meetings held: 38
  • Field days/tours conducted: 108

"Hundreds of Pennsylvanians have committed to adopt agricultural best management practices, install stormwater best management practices or implement erosion and sedimentation controls as a result of these projects. It's amazing that conservation districts make a difference in their communities with $2,000 or less!" said Shannon Wehinger, PACD Director of Communications.

This map shows the locations of the 22 projects which took place during the 2013-14 NPS Mini-Grant round.

Certified Professional in Erosion and Sedimentation Control Review and Exam

Rick Celender (left) and Warren Cohn instruct the CPESC Training and Review Course in Pittsburgh. Photo taken by Terry Fisher.

The Certified Profession in Erosion and Sedimentation Control (CPESC) Review Course and Exam, which took place in Pittsburgh on June 25 and 26, was a huge success. Because class size is limited, a number of people had to be turned away. However, there is still time to register for a second training and exam scheduled for August 27 and 28 in Williamsport, PA.

A CPESC is a specialist who has met established standards of expertise, experience and knowledge in E&S control. The CPESC Certification provides public evidence of their professional qualifications and is for individuals involved in the following E&S activities:

  • Development and review of permits
  • Design and review of E&S control and drainage plans
  • Installation and inspection of E&S control practices
  • Related activities (such as assisting regulators, authoring handbooks and educating the public).

The training and review on Day 1 is open to anyone interested in learning more about erosion and sedimentation control. A separate application for certification to EnviroCert International, Inc. and a letter of eligibility is required to sit for the exam on Day 2. Go to www.cpesc.org for certification requirements.

For more information on the CPESC - Williamsport Training event, go to the Event tab at www.pacd.org for registration details or contact Terry Fisher at terry-fisher@pacd.org or call 717-238-7223.

Free Conference: Convergence at the Confluence

The 3 Rivers QUEST program will be hosting a one-day water quality monitoring conference titled, "Convergence at the Confluence:  Citizens and Scientists Making a Difference in the Upper Ohio Basin."  The event will be FREE to attend and will feature presentations from water quality experts involved with the 3RQ program, hands-on workshops, and plenty of networking opportunities.

The event will take place at Duquesne University's Power Center in Pittsburgh, PA on Monday, August 11, 2014. Click here to register.

Cornell Offers Soil Health Workshop
Cornell University Department of Crop and Soil Sciences invites conservation districts to its Train-the-Trainer Workshop in Ithaca, N.Y. August 12-15, 2014. Focused on measuring and improving soil health through holistic, adaptive, and data-driven soil management, the workshop will include a mix of classroom training, hands-on field and laboratory experience. Participants will learn about soil health principles, analysis, reporting, interpretation and management from a variety of experts.

For workshop details and to register, click here.  Note, registration is limited and will be handled on a first come, first served basis. An early-bird discount is available until July 15, but some hotel blocks expire before this time. The registration deadline is July 30.

July Observed as "Lake Awareness Month"

According to an official proclamation from Governor Corbett, Pennsylvania is home to more than 2,000 lakes, rivers and ponds. Not only do these waterways provide recreational value to residents and visitors alike, but they also provide economic resources to the state. With July designated as Lake Awareness Month, everyone is reminded to appreciate the state's vast waterways and work to conserve these treasured resources.

Please send any photos with captions from events your district may be hosting or participating in as a part of the monthly observance to Tracy-Raymond@pacd.org. To access the Governor's proclamation, click here
