Back by Popular Demand - Michael Kumer to Speak at Director's Breakfast

Michael Kumer spoke at the 2013 PACD/SCC Winter Meeting. He is set to return for the 2014 meeting.

Many of you may remember Michael Kumer's presentation during last year's winter meeting. We are excited to announce that Michael will be returning to conduct a board visioning exercise during the District Directors' Breakfast on the morning of WednesdayJanuary 29. During the breakfast, Michael will work with directors on developing long-range plans for their individual conservation districts as well as discussing the type of impacts they'd like to have on their home communities. We're excited that he's able to join us again and are certain everyone will benefit from his presentation.

Source Water Collaborative Launches Online Toolkit

nacd LOGO NACD and the Source Water Collaborative (SWC) recently announced a new online toolkit to facilitate partnerships to protect drinking water sources through agriculture conservation practices, stormwater and forest management.

The toolkit offers effective steps for source water protection professionals working at the local or state level to build partnerships with conservation district staff. The toolkit is designed for a variety of audiences - from those who have never worked with their conservation district, to those who have attempted but without success, to those who would like to enhance their current efforts.

As a member of the SWC, NACD was involved in the production of the toolkit, which will be discussed in more detail during a Breakout Session at the 2014 NACD Annual Meeting.

"NACD is committed to working with other partners to protect drinking water sources, and to assisting private landowners at the conservation district level to implement practices to protect this essential resource," NACD CEO John Larson said. "NACD is excited about the Source Water Collaborative's new online toolkit to facilitate interaction between source water protection professionals working at the local or state level and their conservation district."

DEP Unveils Susquehanna River Study Video

DEP announced the launch of an all-new educational video about the ongoing water quality study on the Susquehanna River.

"This video illustrates the complexity and rigorous nature of a technical and time-consuming scientific study," DEP Secretary Chris Abruzzo said. "With a renewed focus on public education, resources like this video are essential to teach Pennsylvanians about this important issue."

DEP worked with Commonwealth Media Services to produce this video. It is the second in a new series of educational videos DEP is developing as part of its Public Participation and Education Initiative launched last fall.

The new video is available on the department's YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/pennsylvaniadep.

Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs Launches Interactive Map Showing Drug Take-back Box Locations
An important pollution prevention activity is properly disposing of prescription drugs. Hundreds of drop-off boxes are keeping drugs from being flushed down toilets and polluting waterways in Pennsylvania. In order to make it easier to find a drop-off location, the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs created an interactive map.
