Thanks to Volunteers, Conservation Districts Front and Center throughout Farm Show Week

Chris Thompson, assistant manager at York County Conservation District, staffs the conservation district booth at the 98th PA Farm Show in Harrisburg.
The work of conservation districts was shared with hundreds of Farm Show participants during the week-long extravaganza, which concluded Saturday, Jan. 11. Despite the weather impacting attendance numbers throughout the week, the PACD booth still had more than 500 visitors stopping by to discuss environmental education opportunities, tools for organic farming and overall conservation resources available to residents throughout the course of the event.
"A lot of work goes into preparing for Farm Show," said Brandi Hunter-Davenport. "With each of us coming together, we were able to educate the public about the work of conservation districts and inform them of resources available for their own conservation efforts at home. A huge thank you is extended to each of the districts for the time spent volunteering and for sending information to be highlighted as a part of the display. Each of your efforts helped us ensure a successful showcase this year."

Several conservation districts also attended the January 9 Public Officials' Day Brunch at the complex. The highlight of the 2014 brunch was a panel discussion comprised of officials from all levels of government providing their thoughts on the future of agriculture in the commonwealth. Later in the day, Dauphin County Conservation District Chair Ron Kopp (also partner and operator of the multi-generational Stoney Lawn Farms in Middletown) participated in the "Best Management Practices Showcase Pennsylvania Ag Forum" at the facility as well. The focus of Mr. Kopp's discussion was on what all farmers do to remain environmentally-efficient while not always able to secure grant dollars or additional revenues to cover the costs.

Energy Task Force Seeks Local Input

The NACD Energy Task Force is now moving forward - we need assistance from anyone that can provide input on the Best Management Practice (BMP) needs of their local energy project contractors in regards to conservation. We could use the assistance of anyone knowledgeable of pipelines, wind farms, oil/gas drilling and any other local energy projects that may have an effect on water and air quality. We would like to have responses and information gathered to review by the Annual Meeting in Anaheim so we may discuss our next steps. Please contact our NACD staffer, Peter Bachmann at peter-bachmann@nacdnet.org or 202-547-6223 with any input you may offer toward the Energy Task Force.
