Annual Act 48 Teacher Workshop Takes Place in Northampton County

Northampton workshop The Northampton Conservation District hosted its annual Act 48 teacher workshop on October 18 at the Lower Mt. Bethel Township Welcome Center in Northampton County. The workshop, entitled "Dirt on Soils", had 20 local teachers in attendance for a day of classroom instruction coupled with on-hands-experience.

The morning session consisted of a presentation on soil dynamics and the relationship with Nonpoint Source Pollution (NPS). During the afternoon session, educators had the opportunity to apply the technical knowledge by engaging them in activities which explored geological formations such as ice derived deposits, vertical outcroppings as well as outcroppings right underneath their feet. Additionally, the afternoon provided a platform for attendees to be able to not only understand but also be able to explain the physical effects of NPS in the Lehigh Valley. The day concluded with the teachers offering several positive comments regarding how great the learning experience was for them.

Financial and other support for this workshop was provided by PACD's NPS Education Office's mini-grant program, through a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act, administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

USDA Drought Assistance Helps Improve Over One Million Acres

NRCS Logo The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has made more than $27 million available for drought-stricken farmers and ranchers to invest in conservation projects on their land. More than 2,000 producers from 22 states have applied these conservation dollars to revitalize their property and to improve its drought resiliency in the years to come. These conservation practices are actively building healthier soil and will lead to better harvests for one million acres of American farmland.
