District Manager's Message:
From Gus Meyer, Montgomery County Conservation District

Greetings from the Piedmont! Down here in the southeast we are finally being reminded that we do in fact live in Pennsylvania. With no measurable snow in 2012 and a summer more reminiscent of a July in Georgia, it is nice to smell wood stoves and see the fall colors firing up, reminding us again of the transitions that define Pennsylvania. From geography, climate and natural resources; to culture, geology and industry this state truly has a bit of everything. Our state is as diverse as it is resilient, and increasingly so it seems.
In Montgomery County and the surrounding region, better known as the Greater Delaware Valley, we have a resilient diversity too, from community revitalization, antiquated infrastructure and congested expressways that accompany urbanization and economic development; to PA agriculture, inspiring history and an assortment of geological/geographic features. These qualities for better and worse do not seem to be attributes that define our District but what makes us similar to the other 65 Districts. In reading the first two of the District Managers Message installments, I was reminded that we all share common goals, are involved in similar work, and collectively contribute to a unified mission of conserving Penn's woods bountiful resources. Schuylkill County Ranks Fourth in the Nation in Food Drive

Staff from the Schuylkill County USDA Service Center "in the field" for the Feds Feed Families initiative.
For the past three years, the Schuylkill County USDA Service Center participated in the Feds Feed Families
food drive. This year, the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Farm Service Agency, as well as the Schuylkill Conservation District and Penn State Extension collected 19,092 pounds of food. This total ranked fourth in the entire nation, so congratulations to Schuylkill County!
"We have made it a friendly competition in our building each year. The conservation district has always been a huge supporter of this effort. The district organized the purchasing of literally truck loads of cabbage to be distributed, organized specific theme drives such as a picnic lunch, and donated all the supplies needed. They also went above and beyond to learn about new facilities that could use the support of the food drive and made contacts to donate items to these additional venues. Out of the 19,092 pounds of food donated this year by the four agencies in the Ag Center, the district was responsible for 5,852 pounds," said Janette Lesher NRCS Soil Conservationist.
The Feds Feed Families program is an annual effort by federal employees to supplement food pantries with food and nonperishable items for needy families. Tens of thousands of federal employees participate at federal offices across the country every summer.
