Grazing Conference Features Dr. Temple Grandin

grazing conference

"She tells it like it is," commented one attendee of the 2012 Southwest Pennsylvania Project Grass Conference about the featured speaker, Dr. Temple Grandin. Dr. Grandin is a designer of livestock handling facilities and a Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University. Her life story has also been made into an HBO movie titled "Temple Grandin." During her first session she dove right in to techniques used to reduce stress on the animals and how to handle livestock humanely.

More than 150 attendees gathered in Indiana, PA on October 11 and 12 to hear Dr. Grandin speak and to attend other conference sessions and field demonstrations with grazing experts. PACD joined over 20 exhibitors packing the exhibit hall. PACD Director of Communications Shannon Wehinger met attendees while staffing the conservation district booth. "We were thrilled to be invited to participate in this event and represent Pennsylvania's conservation districts. Presentations from a diversity of experts along with the tours and demonstrations offered a fantastic opportunity for hands-on learning and networking," said Wehinger. "Dr. Grandin's presentation on best practices for handing livestock was a highlight for me."

Butler County E&S Training Draws Largest Crowd Yet

Harr and Harrell Butler E&S

The third Erosion and Sediment Manual training was held in Butler County from September 24-25. The training drew 250 attendees with a waiting list of over 30! Special thanks to Ian Harrell and Ryan Harr of Butler County Conservation District who (pictured) volunteered to help register attendees.

Take My Picture, Please

cartoon camera Photos are a great way to tell a story. In last week's newsletter edition, we shared tips on what makes a great photo. We just want to remind you to use those tips and send your photos in so that we can feature them in an upcoming edition of Front Page. Photos are our way of letting everyone know what's happening in your home communities. So please remember to share your photos, with a line or two of who's in the photo and what you were doing and we'll be sure to highlight it. And remember, you can also submit photos and caption to your local media outlets and they will place them as well. Let's keep telling our stories!

Awards Available at NACD Annual Meeting in San Antonio

NACD logoOne of the highlights at the 2013 National Association of Conservation District's (NACD) Annual Meeting is the National Conservation Foundation/NACD President's Association $10,000 Conservation District Award. The National Conservation Foundation (NCF) and NACD President's Association seek to encourage and facilitate the implementation of unique programs and services by districts and other conservation organizations. The award is to honor programs that advance the conservation, wise use and orderly development of our nation's natural resources.

In keeping with this mission, the two partnered groups are excited to once again offer a $10,000 award for one winning conservation district to carry out a project within its boundaries. They are seeking on-the-ground projects that touch local communities and that can be completed by Dec. 1, 2013. Projects can use other funding in conjunction with the cash award.

Proposals must include a two- to three-minute video outlining the proposed project. Completed application forms and videos must be submitted to NCF by Dec. 1. Click here to view more information and download an application form. Please contact Rich Duesterhaus at  rich-duesterhaus@nacdnet.org for questions or additional information.

NRCS Update:

Annual Computer Security Training Deadline - January 31, 2013

NRCS Logo It's that time again.  All USDA employees, partners, contractors and volunteers that are on the USDA network, must complete the mandatory FY13 Information Security Awareness (ISA) course and assessment training that is available through AgLearn. The training takes approximately 45 minutes.   You must take the assessment at the end and pass with a 70 percent or higher in order to receive credit.

Network access will be removed on February 1 for any employee, contractor, partner or volunteer who has not completed the requirement by the January 31, 2013 deadline.

Recommendation:  AgLearn tends to slow down during the month of January when everyone is trying to complete the training at the same time to meet the deadline.  The sooner you take the training prior to January, the faster the connectivity will be.

If you have any questions or need guidance, please contact Donna Via at 717-237-2225 or Anne Anderson at 717-237-2143.
