 Dear

How much yoga practice is enough? Once in a while? Once a week? Four times a week?

Patajali spoke about consistency of practice in his Yoga Sutra 1:14:  Sa tu dirgha kala nairantarya satkarasevito drdhabhumih:
Practice becomes firmly grounded when well attended to for a long time, without break and in all earnestness. (Translation by Sri Swami Satchidananda)

We're making changes to our class prices beginning Sept 1.

The price of a single drop-in class is going up but the cost of each class bought as part of a multiple-class card will go down. The biggest change is the expiration date attached to class cards. We know life gets in the way of our best-laid plans so cards will have a grace period built in. (If you really get into a bind, you can gift your remaining classes to someone else). And certainly students are welcome to take more than one class a week!

Which brings us to Patanjali's point about consistency. We yoga teachers love to see our students make progress but you can't do that if you don't have a regular practice. And let's face it - most of us don't practice at home for the same reason most of us don't exercise at home. We get busy and push it further down our to-do list, we don't have the space, we're not sure what to do or we need the energy of a group.

A regular yoga practice doesn't just benefit our bodies. In fact, the asanasas, yoga postures, are only one of the eight limbs of yoga. "Their real importance lies in the way they train and discipline the mind" (B.K.S. Iyengar). Asana, pranayama, dhyana (meditation) - these take us further down our spiritual path when practiced regularly.

We are spiritual beings in physical bodies. Invest in yourself. Invest in your physical and spiritual practice.

massageKeeping Our Balance as We Age Tree pose

We are an aging population. As improbable as it seems, every day, about 10,000 people reach age 65.

As we age, we lose muscle mass and bone density. The danger of falls becomes more serious so maintaining our balance is even more important. Read how we balance and how yoga and tai chi can help.

Infused water for detox

Our intense July heat wave finally broke, bringing cooler temps. But this is summer in the Mississippi Valley so we know more heat and humidity are on the way.

Stay cool with these tips from yoga teacher Melina Meza.
