June 2016

 Dear

More and more often, essential oils are being used in yoga classes. It's no surprise why. For centuries, these oils have been used to heal, calm anxiety, improve concentration, seduce a lover and so much more. Ancient cultures knew the power aromas have on our psyches.

Essential oils are derived from raw plant material such as flowers, leaves, wood, bark, roots, seeds or peel. Their rich fragrances can heal emotional wounds and made into compresses, they can heal physical wounds as well.

How does aromatherapy work? Simply put, airborne molecules inhaled through the nose, nteract with the cilia and cells within the nostrils and with the brain.

Within the brain is the limbic system, a complex group of nerves associated with basic emotions (fear, pleasure) and drives (sex, hunger). This "emotional brain" explains why aromas have such powerful effects on us.

Using essential oils to enhance a yoga practice, such as in the upcoming Yoga and Aromatherapy workshop, increases the mind-body connection we seek.

Massage Reduces Fibromyalgia Pain

Fibromyalgia is characterized by generalized pain, joint rigidity, intense fatigue, sleep alterations, headache. Chronic symptoms cause anxiety and depression. There is no cure for fibromyalgia, so treatment is focused on managing the symptoms.

A 2011study demonstrated that massage-myofascial release techniques improved pain and quality of life in patients with fibromyalgia. A treatment group of 30 patients received a 90-minute massage-myofascial release therapy session weekly for 20 weeks. The control group received a weekly 30-minute session of disconnected magnetotherapy for 20 weeks.

The study found reductions in sensitivity to pain at tender points in patients with fibromyalgia. Immediately after treatment and onemonth after the massage program, anxiety levels, quality of sleep, pain and quality of life were still improved.
