 November 2015

 Dear

With the day-to-day stresses of work, family and other obligations, it's easy to lose our joie de vivre. We sometimes feel like we're on a treadmill, running, running and getting nowhere. But there's a way to combat that feeling of drudgery and hopelessness.

Practice gratitude. There have been a number of studies throughout the years, primarily by Robert Emmons, that have shown a correlation between having a "gratitude attitude" and feeling happier. Click here to read some tips on how to be more grateful.

Our yoga teachers in training are graduating early this month! That weekend, along with Thanksgiving, means some adjustments to our yoga schedule. Please see below for these changes. If YOU would like to become a certified yoga teacher, we'll be starting a new session February 2016. Details to come next month.

It's not too late to sign up for Jerry Whitten's next Tai Chi session, especially if you're a beginner. Give us a call if you're interested - we know Jerry would love to teach you this centuries-old practice.

We need bail money! Theresa and Olivia are participating in a Muscular Dystrophy Association fundraiser. Get details here.

We'll be closed Thanksgiving weekend except for the yoga classes noted below. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!

workshopBeing Grateful Can Make Us Happier  laughing-shoulder-woman.jpg

Robert Emmons, author of "Thanks! How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier," has conducted years of research on how gratitude affects our life, makes us happier and what we can do to develop a gratitude mindset.

Try these tips for developing an 'attitude of gratitude':

Think small. Don't wait for the big-ticket items that may never happens, such as winning the lottery. Be grateful for the seemingly inconsequential things in your life - the sun shining through the trees, the turtle you saw on the side of the road, the sweet kiss from your toddler.

Meditate. Meditation can open your mind to new ways of looking at the world and has many other benefits such as decreased moodiness, positive thinking and feelings of happiness. That can lead to a greater appreciation for what you have, i.e., feeling grateful.

Practice mindfulness. Staying in the moment makes it more likely for us to recognize when an opportunity to practice gratitude has presented itself.

Feel the appreciation first. Focusing on the specifics of what you are grateful for deepens your sincerity and makes your gratitude more authentic rather than just lip service.

Practice these tips for a week and you'll be feeling happier and more grateful than before!
