There's been a hint of early fall in these late-summer days and our thoughts have turned to school. Some of us are parents, sending children back to the classroom after a summer of fun. Some of us are going back to school ourselves, learning new skills or sharpening our techniques, keeping our certifications up-to-date. Regardless of who is doing the learning or why, it's almost guaranteed computers will be in use. If you've ever sat down to work at a computer and gotten up two or three hours without a break, you're familiar with how tired and dry your eyes feel. For help, set a timer to go off every 20 minutes or so and try these eye exercises.
Interest is growing in our 4-week men's beginner's yoga class. You can read how men can benefit from yoga and get details about it below. Like us on Facebook and private message us to register.

Too Much Screen Time? Yoga Can Help Dry Eyes
Computers are an integral part of our daily lives. We use them for work and school, play games on them and keep in touch with family and friends around the world. But staring at a computer screen for hours at a time can wreak havoc on our health if we aren't careful. If your eyes feel dry and tired after hours of screen time, try these exercises based on a 2006 study published in Head & Face Medicine (2:46). (You can read an August 2011 summary of the study and its results here.) Visual cleansing exercise #1Move your eyes in eight directions, using your right thumb (and when gazing to the left, your left thumb) as a cue to direct your gaze. The directions are up, down, up to the left, down to the left, up to the right, down to the right and rotation of the eyes clockwise and counterclockwise. Visual cleansing exercise #2Gaze at a flame placed at eye level without blinking. While keeping your gaze on the flame, "defocus" your eyes. Throughout the exercise, sit upright and avoid moving your head to shift your gaze. The participants did a pre- and post-study self-rated assessment. The 60-day study found a significant decrease in self-rated visual discomfort for the group of participants who practiced yoga regularly, including the above two exercises. The physiological changes brought about by a reduction in anxiety and a relaxed state are associated with better visual perceptual sensitivity and a higher frequency of blinking, which helps alleviate dry eyes.

Join the Ranks of Other Men Who Practice Yoga
Join the ranks of SealFit creator Mark Divine, the entire Seattle Seahawks football team and Kevin Love of the Cleveland Cavaliers, when you sign up for Beginner's Yoga for Men, 6-7 pm, Tuesday, Sept. 22-Oct. 13.
If you're a guy who's been curious about yoga but didn't want to get all "touchy-feely" about it, then check out our Beginner's Yoga for Men class. This all-levels class will introduce you to the principles and importance of pranayama (breath control), show you some postures that will increase flexibility in key body areas such as hips and shoulders, and explain how practicing meditation - even just 5-10 minutes a day - can improve your focus and concentration.
We promise we won't make you hold hands and sing Kumbaya. But we do promise that with practice you'll see improved mobility, concentration and overall well-being. You can read last month's article here.
This 4-week class starts Tuesday, Sept. 22. Cost is $40 but space is limited so sign up today. To register, like us on Facebook, then private message us with your name and number.
