workshopHonor Summer Solstice with 108 Sun Salutations

Can you do 108 Sun Salutations in a row?

Surya Namaskar - Sun Salutation - is a series of 12 yoga postures done in a flowing manner. Traditionally, 108 Surya Namaskars are done on June 21, Summer Solstice. This year, the day coincides with International Day of Yoga.

Why 108? Some say it's because there are 108 mala beads. It could be because there are 108 pithas, or sacred sites, throughout India. Or maybe it's because the diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the earth.

Regardless, doing 108 Sun Salutations is grueling, no doubt. It requires physical and mental stamina. But with a little preparation and training (just like for a marathon!) it can be done.

Download a 3-week training program here, which offers lots of tips and modifications to help you power through, along with other ideas to prepare and recover.

taichi Why Athletes Need Tai Chi

    Tai Chi pose

If you're an athlete, your goal is to increase your speed, power and endurance, and stay injury-free. Long distance runs, practice games and strength workouts are typical.

Practicing tai chi with its slower, more mindful moves seems counter-intuitive but it can add another dimension to your training.

Read the FOUR reasons why athletes need tai chi. And then sign up for Jerry Whitten's next 10-week session starting June 8.
