 August 2013

 DearGreetings!

The recent cool weather has been a pleasant surprise, putting a bounce in our steps as we enjoy a respite from usually-steamy August. We're spending the extra energy in an early morning yoga class on Wednesdays. Won't you join us as we greet the day with Sun Salutations and meditation?

As if we need yet another reason to practice tai chi, a recent study suggests doing so can extend our lives. Master Jerry Whitten teaches tai chi nearly every day and a new session starts
next week.

We have a new massage therapist on staff! Sarah Smith is passionate about educating others on the healing benefits of massage and helping others. You can find out the massage styles she practices  here.

Sometimes the only days we have to ourselves are Sundays so why not schedule yourself a massage then? We're offering massages on Sundays, Mondays and evenings by appointment only.

Are you experiencing pain from a medical problem? Consider acupuncture for relief. Dr. Jaime Sanchez is accepting appointments for the treatment of immune and respiratory disorders, weight gain and more. See the side column for available days and times.

Kendelle Pelot has a new skincare line - Rx Systems PF. Give her a call at 462-3900 to find out more. She might even give you a hint about an "appealing" special she's offering next month!

Curious about Yoga Teacher Training, what you'll learn and how it can benefit it you personally? We're going to corner too-busy Olivia Kelly, who's been taking the workshop, and answer some of those questions for you next month.

The next Yoga Teacher Training starts up again February 2014, which gives you plenty of time to plan for this nine-month long class.

Dolphin is an intermediate posture and a good pose that benefits students working toward headstands. It's also great for those who sit at computers most of the day because it opens the upper back region and relieves stress.

We offer a wide variety of classes and times. Check out our calendar to find something that fits into your schedule or a service to give you a pick-me-up.

Can Tai Chi Reduce Mortality?

Can Tai chi reduce mortality? A recent study suggests that might be the case.

There are many known benefits of practicing tai chi - it improves balance and reduces the risk of falls in older adults, increases our flexibility and lowers blood pressure, and generally improves our quality of life. But can it reduce our mortality?

A study recently published by American
Journal of Epidemiology assessed the associations of regular exercise and specifically participation in Tai Chi, walking, and jogging with total and cause-specific mortality among 61,477 Chinese men in the Shanghai Men's Health Study (2002-2009). Information on exercise habits was obtained at baseline using a validated physical activity questionnaire. Deaths were ascertained through biennial home visits and linkage with a vital statistics registry.

During a mean follow-up of 5.48 years, 2,421 deaths were identified. After adjustment for potential confounders, men who exercised regularly had a hazard ratio for total mortality of 0.80 compared with men who did not exercise. The corresponding hazard ratios were 0.80 for practicing Tai Chi, 0.77 for walking, and 0.73 for jogging. Similar inverse associations were also found for cancer and cardiovascular mortality.

The study provides the first evidence that, like walking and jogging, practicing Tai Chi is associated with reduced mortality.

Asana Zone

asanazoneDolphin Pose
    Makarasana

Sometimes referred to as the puppy pose, Dolphin opens up the shoulders while strengthening the arms, legs as well as the core body. This is an intermediate posture and is a good all-round pose that will benefit students who are working toward headstands.

Dolphin is an inverted 'v' position with the forearms and toes on the floor on the floor with the rest of the body curved upwards in a v-like formation.

Because this pose helps relieve stress and tension in the upper back region, it's an excellent pose for those who have to sit for long periods.

How to do
  1. Begin on your hands and knees; make sure your knees are in line with your hips and your wrists in line with your shoulders.
  2.  Bring your elbows to the floor with your forearms parallel on the floor. Make sure your shoulders and elbows are in line with each other.
  3. Exhale, curl your toes under and lift your knees up from the floor. Hang your head between your upper arms, being sure to keep your neck neutral.
  4. Gradually straighten your knees and press your heels into the floor.
  5. Hold for at least 30 seconds. While exhaling, gently bend the knees to release them to the floor. Or move directly into downward facing dog.
  6. Once in the full posture, adjustments can be made by bending the knees to allow for tight hamstring muscles.

Do:

  • keep your core engaged

Don't

  • overextend your neck

Benefits
  • Improves digestion
  • Relieves headache, insomnia, back pain, and fatigue
  • Therapeutic for high blood pressure, asthma, flat feet, sciatica
  • It helps in stretching the shoulders, spine, arches, hamstrings and calves.
  • It strengthens and increases the flexibility of the spine, arms and legs.
  • It helps relieve stress and tension in the upper back region and is therefore especially beneficial to those whose jobs require them to sit for long periods.
Contraindications
  • If you have had shoulder and neck injuries,  keep your legs bent while practicing this pose

Try Dolphin Push-ups too -- clasp your hands, then push yourself forward so your face is over your hands and you are in Chatarunga. Push your hips back up into Dolphin as you straighten your knees. Repeat.
