It happens every year. When school supplies appear on the shelves, yellow buses on the streets, hordes of small people on the playgrounds, I get all tingly inside. The energy of beginnings kicks in and my love of learning surges to the fore.
For the past 38 years, I have experienced the rites of autumn as a spectator, buying a new 3-ring binder, lunch box, or a set of pocket folders to participate vicariously in the rush. This year is different: I hopped on a bus myself, stood in line at the bookstore, and found my seat in a classroom. The "Griz card" in my wallet verifies my status as a University of Montana student. This year, I signed on for an active part in the Back to School game.
I am not sure why I waited until now. I had learned long ago that many colleges offer discounts for the over-65 crowd. I had fantasized about studying something that intrigued me, unconfined by a prescribed curriculum. It took a while for me to unearth the details and take action. Now I am so glad that I did!
I have always enjoyed music. Lyle and I take advantage of the many affordable performances in our hometown. I have, however, always wanted to add a level of understanding to my pleasure. I am, therefore, dipping that first toe into the pool of educational opportunity with a music appreciation class. I even decided (after hesitating) to take the class for credit, challenging my motivation to learn with the help of tests, reports, and a grade. After just a few lectures, I am hooked. The professor is enthusiastic and well organized. The material is fascinating.
Then last night, I heard about a beginning class in African drumming. Although I have always enjoyed music, I haven't played an instrument since eighth grade. I'm on a roll; count me in!
Summer is mostly over. The smoke from forest fires has lifted, and the air is crisp. A few trees are turning gold. And I am excited about going back to school.
Do you love to learn? What subjects interest you the most? How have you nurtured those interests in recent years? Is there anything new you want to try now?
