Development in Finance Workshop

Fin Min GordhanAgbiz, The Banking Association of South Africa and the South African Insurance Association hosted a very successfull Development Finance in Agriculture Workshop on 19 October 2012.  The Workshop brought together the major role players and stakeholders in the broader agriculture industry who shared their experiences and opportunities, noted barriers and constraints.

Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan opened the workshop with a keynote address.  He said we yet have to find sustainable ways to finance capacity building of small farmers to grow and diversify the agricultural industry. Without investing in tomorrow's farmers and getting young people involved, there will be no long term future for the agricultural industry in South Africa.  The minister summarized the financial challenges as follow: * The need to provide appropriate insurance products for small scale farmers. * The need to provide long term debt at competitive costs to emerging and large farmers. * The need to support capacity building through direct capacity building programmes and by supporting farmers and farmer co-ops through equity.

The Minister thanked Dr John Purchase, Agbiz CEO, for showing his leadership by inviting him to get involved in this workshop where different forces on different levels collaborate to create common ground. He encouraged the delegates to also show their leadership and not waiting for the President or anyone else to create a better future.
