Hi there, Sexy!
Summer is coming to a close all too soon it seems. Do you have any fitness goals you haven't reached? Did you skip steps trying to get to them faster, only to have caused yourself setbacks and/or disappointment? In this edition, we discuss the vital importance of not skipping steps through fitness progression--particularly with stability to improve athletic strength and skill. We also would like to encourage students of ALL levels, taking pole classes, to perform in our fall recital, November 16th. It's a wonderful experience and fabulous way to show your friends and family your amazing skills!
Our very long awaited exterior facade is being installed! Be aware that this can upset parking in front of the studio. You may, for a short time, need to park in the side parking lot West of our parking lot next to the party store. We're sorry for the inconvenience!
We look forward to seeing you soon!
*You've received our new monthly newsletter because we met you at a class or a party with the studio. We hope you'll stay a part of our community so that we can send you updates about exciting changes at PFR. If you don't wish to receive future mailings, please feel free to unsubscribe at the bottom of the page.

Fitness Progression: Never Skip Stability
There is a progression in fitness training: stability, strength, and power. If steps are skipped--in an anxious effort to reach a fitness goal--we don't benefit from our workouts. Stability is often overlooked and it is the most important; because without it, we use bad form, stressing out our joints and putting ourselves at serious risk of injury. When you hear "stability" you might think of your core muscles, and they are a big part of what we're talking about, though we're referring to isolated muscle contractions throughout your entire body. Master these and you can build athletic strength (not bulk).
To isolate a muscle contraction, you hold your position rather than power through it. Imagine holding a can of soup and keeping your arm straight out in front of you for, say, 15 seconds. You're strengthening the muscles around your shoulder joint. Hold the can out to the side and you isolate the muscles in a new way. If those joint muscles are strong, you will be able work more efficiently and successfully through different exercises with less risk of injury. If you have been injured, isolation exercises will help rehabilitate the weakened muscles so you can rebuild your body. They can also be geared for specific sports like we do for our aerialists, making their tricks easier and safer.
Your core is your biggest group of stabilizing muscles assisting in walking upright, reduced lower back pain, reduced tendon injuries, and increased strength and power. Without any core strength (abdominals and back), what happens when you lift something heavy? You become imbalanced, correct? Depending on how you're lifting will determine the injuries you could get, but they will all involve your back and when that's hurt, your daily life is greatly impacted.
All of our classes strengthen your trunk in numerous ways, but let's discuss the other parts they stabilize; take BalletFIT and Poleates, for example. There's balancing work done on the balls of the feet, so not only is your core learning to engage--lessening wobble--you are strengthening your ankles and all the small muscles around your knee and hip joints. These muscles can mean the difference between joint replacement surgeries or not in your future. For the present it means: less slip and fall risk during winter, an easier/longer duration walking in high heels, keeping balanced when knocked into, and keeping proper form when exercising.
The same practice can be applied to your upper body, reducing strain when lifting heavy objects or yourself, if you are doing aerial or more traditional exercises. Handstand drills are only one of many excellent methods used for this and are done in our AerialYOGA and Boot Camp classes. Progressing at your level, you use either the silks or a wall for support, allowing your body to get used to holding its own weight. It is also helpful for pole work when learning split grip for spins, tricks, and floor work. Without the proper muscle conditioning, you set yourself up for stress fractures, tendonitis, muscle tears, and even sprains.
If you've tried a class and had difficulties--causing you to not want to come back--was it because you felt weak? Did the other students make certain activities look easy while you struggled? Don't give up! Your body will learn with each class you take, just like theirs did, and you will see tremendous improvement in your form, strength, power, endurance, and confidence! It's the act of trying that makes us stronger and you only fail if you give up. We'll see you soon!

Tips To Get You Ready For Our Fall Recital!
We hope you join us November 16th for our second annual student recital! It's a great way to show your family and friends what you've learned in our pole dancing classes and receive support from the other students. If you've never performed before, don't worry, this is a safe and encouraging way to do so--open only to students, family, and friends. Most of last year's participants hadn't done this before either and many are going to do it again. It's a wonderful way to see how far you've come and you will learn so much about yourself and performing by participating.
Check out this article from last year's September issue on building a routine. Please inform any instructor that you would like to participate (we'll keep you posted about practice times available) or ask them any questions you may have. If you are feeling unsure or don't believe you know enough, talk to us about it. We would like all levels to join in and there may be some group routine(s) we can interest you in, as we finalize details. If you are a beginner and think you need to know tricks, here are two samples of beginner level routines without them: one is a little sexy and the other contemporary. Whatever moves you know, give them your own style. Your beautiful and we'd love to see your dance! Sign ups sheets are on the bulletin board.

Fitness Challenge:
Elbow Plank With Variations
This demonstration of an elbow plank, to work your core, shows three variations: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. If you're more sedentary or have never done these before, start at the beginner level and do 10. Work your way up to 3 sets of 10 over time and then move to the intermediate level until you can do 3 sets of 10 of those. Finally, move on to advanced repeating the same method. The goal is to do all levels for 3 sets of 10.
Pole Move of the Month:
Climbing the Pole
Climbing is fundamental in pole dancing and is taught in our PoleTRICKS classes. This tutorial shows how to prepare your body to climb with a simple drill, how to do a basic climb, and how to do a girly-kick climb. Only do the girly-kick climb once you've mastered the basic climb. It is a sexy move that requires more strength, even though it looks effortless. Enjoy!
