Breathe Easy and Create Your Routine!
It may seem daunting to make a routine, especially, if you don't have a background in dancing-any dancing-the good news is, you aren't alone. We want to give you a safe and friendly environment for you to do this for the first time. So, cast aside your doubts and fears and read on!
The first thing you will start with is your music and the extensive guidelines at this site, will help you once that choice is made. Make sure you are choosing a song that fits your level. If you are a beginner, you don't want one that is over three minutes with a fast beat. You will want something under three minutes with slower, steadier beats, and some tempo changes to add interest.
If you know pole tricks and have some favorites that you can execute well, then add them in, but be sure to have alternate moves in case you aren't sticking to the pole or you missed a step and need to improvise a transition. If you don't know any tricks, here is an example of a beginner level routine using spins and transitions. Watch several videos on YouTube of pole dancing, dancing (any style), and even floor gymnastistics. How do they use the music? Are there moves you can use? And how's their stage presence?
When practicing your dance, you don't have to do it over and over. You can practice in sections, especially the areas that are the most challenging and then work on it start to finish. That way you will know if your performance fits the length of the song, because if you spend too much time struggling in one area, it may seem you have to makes cuts when you don't. Now comes the fun part, filming yourself.
As we pole dance, the moves may feel right and we think because of that, it looks good too. Not true, unfortunately. You will want to watch your practices to see if your form is correct, your transitions are smooth, your moves match the music, and evaluate your expression. We can spend so much time perfecting what our bodies are doing that we forget what our face is doing. Is your expression flat, angry, or doing something else beyond explanation? Work on playing it up with the audience and engage them with a smile and eye contact as you perform.
Filming will also help you keep your focus on where your audience is (which is your camera). You'll want some of your spins and other moves to land at specific points for the best view of your performance. For instance, you don't want to "shake your tail" to the wall, but to the people and you don't want to "body roll" facing them either, they should see your profile.
We hope this has given you the confidence to say, "Yes, I can do this!" If you discover difficulties during your practice or have questions not covered here or in the link, we'll be offering times that you can meet with us for assistance. Now, turn on some music and get creative!
No pole at home? We offer "Open Pole," for practice, Saturdays 9:45 a.m.-11:30 a.m. |

Train like an Athlete, Eat like an Athlete
Perhaps you don't consider yourself an athlete, but you are. Your body requires more protein, than the average person, to recover properly. By avoiding protein while you exercise hard, you weaken your muscles, making them susceptible to injury and prolong the recovery when injured. Use the formula in this article to determine how much your body needs. Then track your protein grams for an average day (most calorie apps do this automatically) and see where you need to make adjustments.
While we show you how to use proper form to minimize and prevent injuries, the fact is, they can still happen. Aside from following doctor's orders and your instructor's advice to heal quickly, you should be eating like an athlete now. Even tendonitis can be alleviated by good nutrition, because certain foods can worsen the inflammation and you don't want to be in added pain.
Now that you know what nutritional changes you need to make, let's take some guess work out of your food choices. For high protein snack ideas that you can take on the go, click here and if you are looking for pre and post workout snacks, try any of these 50, like Chunky Monkey shake-yum! |

Trainer's Corner Junk-Food Facts:
Are you a junk-food junkie? Here's what you need to know.
It's the 21st century and "junk food" has gone global. For better or for worse (mostly worse), junk food is now available all over the world. We see it most everywhere we go-- in grocery and convenience stores, fast-food restaurants, on television -- usually looking very appealing. But just what are the facts about junk food?...Read more...
Trainer's Challenge:
Treat Your Body as a Temple
Many of us treat our bodies very well. We limit junk food, exercise, and get as much rest as our schedules allow, but are we really treating it as a temple? If you were to do that, what would it mean to you? Make a list of all the different things you would do to achieve this and then do it for the month. After, ask yourself these questions: Do I feel better? Were any too difficult for any reason? And, will any of the changes be permanent?
Fitness Challenge:
Boot Camp Circuit
This month's challenge is a fitness circuit compiled of a few exercises seen in our boot camp classes. Use a sturdy chair to do squats, mountain climbers, tricep dips, and knee lifts (all with modifications) to work your upper body, lower body and cardio at your level. Follow the directions in this video for proper form, number of sets, and time for each exercise. If you do this circuit three times, you've completed a 15 minute workout!
Pole Move of the Month:
Attitude Spin
This tutorial shows how to do a beautiful attitude spin. The first level uses a basic hand grip on the pole as the outside leg swings out to hook the pole at the calf. The back leg pushes off the ground and curls behind the body, staying parallel with the floor. After a little, "air time" the feet land softly on the ground to come to a standing position. The second level takes the spin all the way to the floor and adds a little floorwork to get up sexy. Doing the spin one-handed, is the final level. Only do this when you are strong enough to do spins on both sides of the body to prevent injuries. Enjoy!
