A THANKFUL HEART, FROM MS. BONNIE RIVER
For the past several months, Journey School has been preparing 'behind the scenes' for the next stage in its leadership configuration.  Specifically, Bonnie River, Journey School's Co-Educational Director and long-time friend, has written the community an important letter. Please click here for her heartfelt message.
CALL TO ACTION: VOTE FOR JOURNEY SCHOOL'S MUSIC PROGRAM

Help win
$50,000 for new instruments, a sound system worthy of our students, and teaching support for Journey's innovative music program. During the next 6 weeks, beginning on Monday, November 12th we ask you to vote online and via text every day to help Journey win the Clorox Power a Bright Future grant.  The top vote getter in each of 3 categories wins $50,000.  Our music program is up against 400 other schools in the "Create" category, but we can win this with your persistent help and creativity in getting votes from outside our parent and faculty community! Be on the lookout for messages you can blog, post on Facebook, email, tweet, and pin on Pinterest! Let's get this done just like our Compassionate Campus grants!
BE SURE TO RECRUIT 5 FRIENDS OUTSIDE OF THE COMMUNITY TO DO THE SAME!  THIS IS IMPORTANT.
A NEW MODEL FOR PUBLIC SCHOOL
MUSIC EDUCATION

In most public schools, the rare music programs which have survived budget cuts and a narrowed instructional focus are treated as stand-alone, extracurricular activities with little or no connection to curriculum standards or other areas of learning.

At Journey School, the first public charter in Orange County, CA, music is integrated into the academic program. Music imbues math, history, science, language arts, and civics lessons with a soulful beauty that brings these subjects to life. Each day at Journey is a woven composition of knowledge and the arts which literally sings through the campus.

Starting in Kindergarten, every student, in and throughout each grade, hones their singing voices with increasingly intricate melodies and learns a musical instrument - from the pentatonic flute, diatonic soprano recorder, violin, ukulele, alto and tenor recorders, to ultimately study a reed instrument or the acoustic guitar in 8th grade.

Thanks to the efforts of our new Development Director, Elizabeth Beas, as well as the parent volunteer Development Team, we are the only school in Aliso Viejo that is a Grant Nominee for the Clorox Power a Bright Future $50,000 award. Read more about our music specialty classes on our Journey is Music! page at JourneySchool.net.
TIMELINESS:  THANKS & KEEP STRIVING
We've seen improvement this week when it comes to timeliness. So far, tardy incidents have been reduced by 75% thanks to your cooperation. Still, we need to do better. The goal is to eliminate the tardy problem entirely so we don't waste precious time and effort. Please click here for suggestions.  Also, if you have multiple tardies you will soon receive a phone call and written notification.
YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Thank you for voting and making your voice heard on Election Day. The outlook for schools is better than when we started the week, but we're not out of the woods yet.

As the year closes and we enter the season of giving, please fulfill your Close the Gap commitment. In the last week, Cindy has received approximately 10 commitments totaling $8500 for the school year. Now is the time to start contributing or to increase your gift to benefit from year-end tax incentives.  Here is how you can help:
  • Print the Close the Gap Pledge Form from JourneySchool.net and turn it into our Business Specialist, Cindy Barry.
  • Make a one-time online donation at JourneySchool.net!
  • Talk to your employer to see if they have an employee matching program. Cindy will be happy to help provide any information you need for your employer. The Tax ID and 501(c)(3) information is included in the Close the Gap Pledge Form.

We've entered a new era at Journey School of big dreams and bold action. We are taking our destiny into our own hands. Click here to read more about our Development Director and plans to pursue grants and outside donations.
BOOK FAIR:  PROMOTING A LOVE OF READING
Journey School wants every child to fall in love with books and reading!  When children read on a daily basis, it increases their skills in prediction, interpretation, imaginative thinking and ethical decision making.

All Journey children need to read independently or with family members for a minimum of 30 minutes every day to foster this active-love-of-learning through the written word
. To promote this effort, the Scholastic Book Fair will be held next week, November 13-16. Each class will be escorted to the MPR at a specific time during the week and given the opportunity to select and purchase books onsite. Cash, check and credit card will be accepted. You will also have the option to purchase online.

On Wednesday, the Scholastic Book Fair will remain open until 3:30 PM for a school lunch fundraiser
: "Lunch with a Loved One." Parents, grandparents, and friends are invited at 12:30 PM to bring lunch, eat at the lunch tables, and then visit the Fair. We are really hoping that Grandparents will take this opportunity to read to the young ones.

The Scholastic Book Fair is not only a fundraiser for our school (we earn a cash percentage of our total sales), but also it earns Journey School points that we use to get free books for our classrooms! In addition, each class will be collecting spare change to purchase books for their individual classrooms.

This year the Book Fair will include an extended purchasing period online. Every dollar spent through the Online Book Fair earns points for Journey. If your child is in need of books for summertime reading or is having a birthday, please encourage family members who can't visit the Book Fair in person to support our efforts during the Online Book Fair
which runs through November 30.
Thank you Lisa Crow, Lisa O'Neil and the whole dream team!
WHO DO I ASK WHEN I HAVE A QUESTION?
Direct communication lines are the vehicles that Journey School uses to foster understanding and to resolve challenges or conflicts as they arise. We've put together a summary of the communication channels available to you in our new Parent Frequently Asked Questions section
of JourneySchool.net.
HEALTH ANNOUNCEMENT FOLLOW-UP
The student referenced in the MUMPS health notice last week tested negative for MUMPS. Thanks  to the family for their handling of the situation. We could not have asked for more responsible partners.

NEW OFFICE ORGANIZATION WILL
BENEFIT STUDENTS
Last week, the Main Office switched spaces with the Teacher's area. Teachers now have space where they can rest quietly and plan meaningful instruction for your children. Support Staff now has extra space to get their tasks accomplished. As we continue to "raise the bar" around campus, please note that The Main Office is a Quiet Zone. We ask for low voices to respect and support the needs of staff. THANK YOU.
