Journey School Newsletter

May 15, 2012
|
Journey School continues to generate positive momentum. Through the efforts of our parent volunteer communications team, we received press coverage from CBS and the OC Register (Click to read: Journey School welcomes spring with May Faire). Click to enter our expanding Press Newsroom which features inspiring stories and important information -- with links that are easy to share with your family and friends via email or social media.
It's IMPORTANT to read to the end of the newsletter (calendar section) because there are new dates that you will want to know (for attending class plays and end of the year ceremonies). Dates are subject to change, but we wanted to share plans as they stand now.

Students have displayed admirable effort on the STAR. Please be sure they continue to get lots of sleep, nutrition, and support from the home front. Click here for the testing schedule. Thanks for ensuring your student arrives each day on time. Thank you.

- Journey School teachers design lessons that engage students' minds, bodies, and feelings. Whatever the grade might be you can see students: recite rhythmic verses to improve speech articulation; make beautiful music on a variety of instruments; engage in mental math exercises to increase automaticity; summarize stories in their own textbook; create art from their own imagination; garden, build, and explore the practical arts; and, research and solve problems through collaboration, experimentation, and project-based learning.
- As children grow older, students begin to participate in overnight field trips. These field trips are actually rites of passages that allow the children to deepen their experience of the curriculum in an outdoor learning environment. These trips also challenge and fortify character; as students face their fears, work together in community, and participate in experiential learning.
- Some of the locations visited include:
- 3rd Grade: A local camping trip to study organic farming, community supported agriculture, and animals.
- 4th Grade: A local camping trip to Gold Rush Country or Native Lands to study California history.
- 5th Grade: A camping trip to Catalina to study botany, ecology, and stewardship.
- 6th Grade: A camping and hiking trip to Bishop to study mineralogy and geology while pushing way beyond perceived physical barriers.
- 7th Grade: A tall ship sailing trip to Catalina to study Oceanography and Eco-Leadership.
- 8th Grade: A week-long Eel River trip geared toward strengthening the eighth grade student's mind, body, and spirit in preparation for high school.

NATIONAL CHARTER SCHOOLS WEEK
|
In celebration of last week's National Charter Schools Week, Journey hosted dignitaries, honored staff during Teacher Appreciation Week, and featured alumni stories of success.
- Read about Journey's pioneering history on JourneySchool.net click here.
- Recently, the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education interviewed the Superintendent of Sacramento City Schools, John Raymond, to find out why he is such a strong supporter of Waldorf Education: He even sends his own children to a Waldorf-Inspired School. For the latest from the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education click here.
- For 4 reasons why Journey is poised for success click here. For our complete Charter Document visit our website for the printable PDF document.
Thank you to all of our parents for your generosity during last week's teacher appreciation week. The wonderful cards, baskets, flowers, gifts, delicious foods, and more were greatly appreciated by the entire staff.

This Friday, the Sixth Graders are going to delve deeper into the subjects of recycling and composting. In April, they filled a compost bin with our Master Gardener, Erik Katzenmaier, and have watched the compost break down over the past weeks. The Earthroots team will:
- review compost management: greens & browns, what to add & what not to add
- possibly hands on turning/adding to bin
- learn how composting & recycling fits into the schools permaculture design (with a basic intro to permaculture), including eco-leadership
- and cover recycling how-to's with hands-on demonstration.
Please email Michele Whiteaker at ocplayparks@gmail.com if you'd like to join our team of parent garden volunteers who keep the outdoor classrooms prepped for lessons that serve our students. A weekly email is sent out before our Thursday work days to give updates and let everyone know what tasks need to happen. We'd love to welcome new volunteers.
