U.S. and Cuba Reestablish Diplomatic Relations

Historic opening

WASHINGTON, DC -- This morning USA Rice President & CEO Betsy Ward attended the ceremony officially opening the Cuban embassy here.  Hundreds of people gathered to watch as Cuban Ambassador Jose Ramon Cabañas and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla presided over the flag-raising ceremony at the building that has served as a Cuban "interests section," where officials process visas and conduct basic consular services.

"This is truly exciting for those of us who have been working on this issue for a very long time," said Ward.  "The establishment of official ties between Cuba and the U.S. is an important step forward.  The U.S. rice industry is ready to open this market but there is still a lot of uncertainty about when normal trade relations will occur."

The U.S. embassy in Havana will officially open in mid-August.

US, Cuba Reopen Embassies After 54 Years Kansas City Star

Even as the Cuban flag is hoisted in Washington, a difficult relationship between the United States and Cuba is expected to remain just that - difficult - but with the difference that the two sides are now talking more freely with each other to work through the many issues that still separate them.

Remnant Landscapes: Carolina Rice Culture from the Air Post and Courier

Carolina Gold rice was reintroduced as a crop in 2005 and now is grown by about 10 farmers in the state as well as other farmers in Texas. By 2010, the specialty crop became profitable, and now some West Coast farmers who are struggling with the implications of the water shortage are eyeing South Carolina as a possible alternative.
