A Message From Our President Our God is truly a God of great hope -- when we trust Him we see the Holy Spirit's presence in all we do. I wish this for each of you today and perhaps this is one you can pass onto someone else who may need to feel God's peace and know he is present in their lives.
First Mass of the Year - Tomorrow, September 9
We hope you will join us for Mass tomorrow at 9:30 a.m in our Student Activity Center. Our school Chaplain, Fr. Jim Dunning will be our presider. Mass will be for students in Grades One through Eight; however, all students TK through Eight are required to wear Formal Uniform. We understand that some students may not have their vests or sweaters for tomorrow's Mass or may not have them monogrammed. We do have permit parking in the neighborhood but NO parking is allowed in the Memorial Care parking lot.
PTO will be hosting a Parent Fellowship Coffee Social following Mass. More information can be found in the PTO section below.
Missionary Childhood Association- MCA Collection at Mass
At each of our schoolwide Masses the students of St. Junipero Serra support Missionary Childhood Association by making a small donation into our collection baskets. These monies do not go unnoticed as we serve the poorest children around the world. Thank you for remembering to support this ministry at tomorrow's Mass.
About Missionary Childhood Association Founded in 1843, the Missionary Childhood Association is an international organization whose membership is made up of students in Catholic elementary schools and religious education programs. It is an organization dedicated to fostering children's awareness of the missionary nature of the Church. The Missionary Childhood Association (MCA) program in the Mission Office exists to be of service to schools and religious education programs in the Diocese of Orange.
Authorized by the Vatican, and in collaboration with the U.S. Bishops, MCA distributes educational and fund-raising programs to schools and religious education programs throughout the United States. It is sometimes known as the Pontifical Association of the Missionary Childhood because it is sponsored in a special way by the Pope. It is the official agency of the Holy Father for the distribution of the fund raising proceeds realized through the efforts of children for their underprivileged brothers and sisters in Third World situations.

Season's Tuition Assistance Luncheon
Volunteer Interest Meeting
Thursday, September 15 7:00 p.m.
(Refreshments served by Casa Ranchero)
We firmly believe that every child that seeks a Catholic education should be afforded one. This is what our Tuition Assistance Program is all about. The program is vital in the lives of many of our families. Tuition Assistance is sometimes the difference between staying at St. Serra during difficult times or having their lives completely up-ended by losing that opportunity for their children.
For the 2016-2017 school year, the tuition assistance distribution committee, after a rigorous, confidential, blind, third-party process, awarded financial assistance to 60 families who would not be here without this assistance. It was the generosity of St. Serra families, grandparents, alumni families and other benefactors of St. Serra that allowed us to make a difference in 91 students lives here at St. Junipero Serra Catholic School. Unfortunately, the need is always larger than what we can ever provide.
The Seasons Tuition Assistance Luncheon began as a way to help the Catholic community in South Orange County make an impact in children/families' lives through the gift of Tuition Assistance support for our families as well as those who are in dire need at sister schools in Santa Ana. While the date of the luncheon is still 4 ½ months away, you can begin to help now by lending us your time and talent and getting involved in this important event. We are seeking table hostesses to decorate and host a table at the luncheon. We also have the following committee chair positions to fill: Reservations, Opportunity Raffle Procurement, Underwriting and Giving Garden. Whether you are business-minded, or wildly creative and love decorating - there is a role for you.
Reminder: Food Drive Tomorrow for St. Kilian Please note that there was a change and a paper bag will be coming home with your child today for your convenience. CLICK HERE to read last week's article in Mrs. Trudell's section to review the details.
Safety and Continued Traffic Challenges
As we conclude the second full week of school, we find we are still having a few major challenges. For the SAFETY of students, staff and parents, please adhere to the following reminders:
- DO NOT use your cell phone while driving through the traffic pattern on campus; it is considered distracted driving and can be very dangerous.
- DO NOT pull out from the flow of traffic. You stop when the car in front of you has stopped, your child will exit the vehicle at this time NO MATTER where in the pattern you have been stopped, and your child will then walk to their designated waiting area. ONLY Preschool students are dropped off in a designated area. ALL other students will exit their car from the point the flow of traffic has stopped.
- DO NOT stop where you feel like it - our traffic procedures have been put in place to keep everyone as safe as possible and have been successful in doing so for several years now. Please follow the procedures to continue to keep everyone safe!
- PLEASE follow ALL directions from the Supervisors.
School Schedule Clarification
As a reminder, the official start time of school is 7:40 a.m. As a courtesy we leave the gates open until 7:45 a.m.; however, students who are dropped off between 7:40- 7:45 a.m. in front of the PEB are considered tardy. Beginning Monday, September 19, this will be strictly enforced.

Essential Learning Systems (ELS) Program
ELS has openings in both after-school sessions!
Younger students who are struggling with letter recognition, letter sound association, decoding skills, reading fluency, reading comprehension, attention and memory may benefit from this program. Older students struggling with these skills or who lack confidence in their academic skills, have difficulty understanding and/or remembering information, take a long time to complete schoolwork and homework, have limited independent learning skills, and/or benefit from additional academic support can also benefit.
ELS is a computerized, multi-sensory, interactive program that improves focus, strengthens information processing skills, and enhances a variety of academic skills (e.g., reading decoding, reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development, and spelling). ELS provides a fun environment where students strengthen their skills in a game-like format and earn points and prizes for their efforts. Two after-school classes are available: 1:50-2:35 p.m. (for students in Grades K through Two) and 2:50-3:40 p.m. (for students in Grades Three through Eight). Students attend ELS four days per week (Monday through Thursday) for a minimum of one academic year.
