A Message From Our President
As we make a goal of this new school year to feel happy and be happy, we are reminded of what Blessed Mother Teresa shared with us.  If we take the time to spread the virtue of love everywhere, others will leave happy too.

Welcome Back! Our 2016-17 school year is off to an amazing start. Our virtues of Hope and Charity are the foundation that will keep us SERRASTRONG in all areas of the school from our Catholic identity, curricular programs, co-curricular programs, and parent-sponsored events. This Sunday, September 4th, Blessed Mother Teresa will be canonized as St. Teresa of Calcutta. CLICK HERE to learn more about Blessed Mother Teresa and her canonization.
A big thank you to all who attended our 2016-17 SERRSTRONG Welcome Blessing and Event.  It was an evening filled with prayer, fun and service.  A very heartfelt thank you to Shelly Soenen (PTO VP Parent/Child events) and Cristen Lebsack (PTO President) for the endless hours of hard work and devotion to this event. It was their gift of time and talent that brought this inaugural event to life.
Back-to-School Nights
Over the next couple of weeks, we will have our Back-to-School Nights where I will review our school theme and how you can be a part of helping us remain SERRASTRONG; share details on our Chapel and STEAM wing project progress, enhanced communication tools/website, and other exciting news. Mrs. Reiss and Mrs. Tipton will speak about new and exciting education opportunities/programs along with an update to Diocesan grading policies and other important curricular programs. The teachers will also share their motivating and outstanding academic plans for the success of all our students. Back-to-School Night dates and times can be found in the Principals' corner below.
Student Store and other items will also be available at Back-to-School Nights. More information can be found in this week's SerraDIPITY.
Mark Your Calendars For Our First Liturgy - Friday, September 9
Our first schoolwide Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the Student Activity Center. We would love for you to join us for Mass and hospitality afterward with our Mass Celebrant and our Administration including Mrs. Reiss, Mrs. Tipton, and Mrs. Trudell. Please note that Formal Uniform is required for all students in Grades 1-8 who attend Mass.

Safe Environment Training Renewal
As you are aware, the Diocesan volunteer requirements are 1) fingerprint clearance and 2) safe environment training. Both requirements must be completed before anyone is permitted to volunteer on campus.  Effective July 1, 2016, the Diocese has amended the safe environment training requirement to be renewed every three years, previously it was every four years. This change will affect the compliance of many of our parents.

We will notify you if you are due for renewal as your name appears on volunteer lists that we received.  However, if you would like to be proactive, please log in
to and you will see the date that you last completed the training. If it has been more than three years, please go ahead and complete the training, print out your certificate of completion, and send that into the Human Resources Office.

Thank you for always keeping the safety of all of our students in the forefront at all times.
Communication is Key to your Partnership with St. Serra
St. Junipero Serra Catholic School is committed to keeping our parents connected to our school through consistent, open, honest, and helpful communication tools. We continue to streamline our communication to help everyone stay connected and not be overwhelmed. I will review this a bit more at the Back-to-School Nights.
SerraDIPITY- Schoolwide Newsletter Generated from the President's
Office (You can have this sent to multiple e-mail addresses)
The SerraDIPITY newsletter is sent out every Thursday afternoon by 3:00 p.m. and remains our most important schoolwide communication tool, covering all programs and events that relate to the entire school. All items covered in the SerraDIPITY are essential to your involvement at St. Serra. These items include, but are not limited to, Masses and other spiritual events, weekly reflection from the President, Christian service projects, fundraisers (e.g. Golf, Harvest, Anchor Ball, Scrip announcements), student services (such as lunch programs and after-school sports), and links to various schoolwide programs and parish/community events.
The Sunday Parent E-mail
Each Sunday you will receive the regular weekly Sunday Parent E-mail that will connect you to the events of the classroom and needs for the upcoming week from the parent perspective. The e-mail is easy to use -- just read the opening paragraph then click on your grade level(s). This information is different than the SerraDIPITY.

Various Uses of Constant Contact
Constant Contact e-mails are sent out for several reasons: updates on fundraisers, immediate communication to parents regarding any safety incidents at the school and for important clarifications that cannot wait until the next SerraDIPITY.

School Messenger
St. Junipero Serra Catholic School currently subscribes to the School Messenger notification system. Text messages sent to phones are used for emergencies or important notifications only.
To receive text messages from the school, you must OPT IN; messages cannot be sent until you confirm that you wish to receive texts.
If you did not opt in last year, or are new to the school,
Send the text Y or Yes to 68453 to be included in the text notifications.
All notifications from the school will be sent from the user "68453" and will begin with "From Serra".
Please note - only cell phone numbers registered with the school who opt in will receive the text notifications. If your cell phone is not registered with the school, please CLICK HERE to complete a change of status form to update your family's contact information. Unfortunately, only parents and guardians may receive notifications from the school.

Principals' Corner
Once again this school year, immediately following the President's news, will be information from our two Principals, Mrs. Reiss and Mrs. Tipton. In this section, they will cover news, information, STAR Testing, Sycamore updates, and reflections on various academic programs. It is informative and quite helpful.

Traffic Information and Reminders
A big thank you to everyone for your patience with traffic the first few days of school, which are always very hectic! As we near the end of the first full week of school, we think everyone is settling into a routine for both the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. As we have mentioned in past years, we are a large school which means, for the most part, the traffic patterns for both drop-off and pick-up run about 30 minutes each barring anything out of our control such as accidents or inoperative traffic lights. If you just plan this amount of time into your day, it should be less stressful. If you would like to read again in detail the student drop-off and pick-up procedures which were included in the Back-to-School Information Constant Contact from Mrs. Trudell, please CLICK HERE.

If you would follow these few general but important traffic reminders, we would greatly appreciate it:
  • DO NOT access, under any circumstances, the parking lots of 1) Memorial Care Medical Plaza on Banderas, 2) the apartment/condo complex behind Memorial Care and 3) the apartment/condo complex on La Ventana right next to the school. We have received numerous complaints from the staff, patients, and residences.
  • DO NOT block the intersection of Antonio Parkway and La Ventana as those residents also need to be able to exit their complex promptly.
  • DO NOT park in the neighborhood across Banderas. They have Permit Parking and you will be ticketed. The Permit Parking is in effect from 7:00-9:00 a.m. and 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. on ALL school days. Only when we have received special permission from the city are our parents allowed to park there. These dates are provided to our parents either via e-mail or through theSerraDIPITY newsletter.
  • Illegal U-turns are very dangerous. For the safety of ALL families, DO NOT make illegal U-turns on any streets surrounding the school.
  • DO NOT use your cell phone while driving through the traffic pattern on campus.
  • DO NOT park in any numbered parking spots as these are designated for staff only
  • If you see any orange cones in a parking space, please DO NOT move them to park your car as they have been designated as reserved spots.
  • Follow the direction of our staff members who are trying to keep EVERYONE safe!
  • Please bring your patience, respect and KINDNESS to and from school with you every day.
  • Parents who witness unsafe driving practices do notify us with their concerns.
Thank you again for cooperating with us to make our traffic procedures run as smoothly as possible!

Social Media Notice
We here at St. Junipero Serra feel that social networking is a wonderful tool for us to share with you the events, news and accomplishments of our students. At present, SJSC only uses Facebook and Twitter.

Parents -  it's also important to know that under no circumstances should our St. Junipero Serra Catholic School name (whole or in part), school logo, photos of our buildings, use of our Charism, Mission or Vision statements, or any part of these statements be used in creating a personal social media account. It is not only our policy, but also falls under the restrictions, rules, or content boundaries of all social media when creating a page.

Posting Photos of SJSC Students on Social Media
Please be cognizant and refrain from posting photos of ANY SJSC student where their name is clearly visible to the viewers. This would include any photos where the student is wearing their student identification badge or sitting at a desk where their name is visible.

Please know that privacy and safety of our students is always our number one priority when making decisions and putting policy and procedures into place.

Facebook Event Pages
If you haven't done so already, please visit our Facebook page to see all of the fun, daily posts, photos, and announcements on what's happening out-and-about and all around campus! Please check out our Golf Classic and Harvest Festival event pages and coming soon Anchor Ball 2017. These pages are a fun way to keep you up to date on the latest news leading up to these exciting events.

Food for Friends
"And now abide: faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity."1 Corinthians 13:13

On Friday, September 9, we will hold our first "Food for Friends" food drive for this school year. We would like to extend a prayer of gratitude to our community for successfully supporting this outreach program at St. Serra each year which benefits the food banks associated with our parishes. Your monthly contribution will continue to feed hungry men, women, and children in our communities throughout the year. Our food banks became a bit low during the summer months, so your contributions are greatly appreciated. What seems like a small amount can truly help a family in need. Not sure what to donate? Non-perishable canned goods or dry foods are welcome.
  • Canned meats, fish, soup, fruits, and vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Hot & Cold cereal
  • Macaroni & Cheese
  • Beans
  • Rice
  • Peanut butter
Food drives also strengthen our community by giving us an opportunity to live the Gospel teachings of Jesus, "Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me."

*New this year* to streamline this program, we will be providing you with a "food flyer" only. We are hopeful you will use a grocery bag from home.

Please contact Louise Valdez with any questions.

**Note all of the dates are the 2nd Friday of each month with the exception of the month of April

Riding the Bus Update
We have had an overwhelming response to the St. Serra Bus Program. We would like to thank our returning St. Serra bus families and welcome our new riders to the bus program. I am beyond thrilled to let you know that both buses are filled at this time on the PM routes, resulting in a wait list.  If you are still interested in the PM routes you may add your name to the waitlist by sending an e-mail to our Transportation Team at You will be notified of availability as they occur in the order in which your request was received. The great news is that there is still room available on both buses for the AM routes and the locations are so convenient. The South Bus has two stops: Holy Trinity and The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints and the North Bus has three stops: Coto Sports Park, Lake Forest Sports Park and The PetSmart Parking Lot (RSM - Avenida de las Flores/Mattina). If you are interested in riding the buses in the morning, please send an e-mail to and we will forward you the necessary information to get started. Information on the daily Parent Shuttle Program can also be found below in this newsletter.

With this being our first SerraDIPITY of the year, we acknowledge the fact that it is a long one! On the bright side, we do have a three-day weekend allowing you extra time to read it.

God is Good...All the Time,
Angeline Trudell

Renaissance STAR Reading and Mathematics Assessments
The Renaissance STAR testing windows for the 2016-2017 school year are:
  • September 6 - September 16, 2016
  • January 9 - January 20, 2017
  • May 22 - June 2, 2017
September Renaissance STAR Testing
The September administration of the Renaissance STAR Reading and Math assessment is from Tuesday, September 6 - Friday, September 16
  • Please note that due to Labor Day on Monday, September 5, assessment begins on Tuesday, September 6.
  • Please be sure to review your child's scores between September 17 and January 8, 2017.
  • Kindergarten will not begin testing until the January administration window.
  • Please CLICK HERE to view the STAR Testing schedule. Grades 1-4 will take the STAR test during their technology time. Please note that 2nd grade will take their test at an earlier than usual time. Grades 5-8 will take the reading STAR test during their ELA class and the math STAR test during their math class.
  • Make sure your children have eaten well on test days. Studies suggest that good nutrition is related to improved attention and concentration.
  • Help your children by encouraging a good night's rest before exams. Children who are tired will have difficulty focusing on their work.
  • Make the morning of test days pleasant. Stress will impair your children's ability to perform their best.
  • Remind your children to dress in layers, so that they are able to adjust to the temperature in the room.
  • Ensure that your children make it to school on-time so that they do not miss any instructions and are allowed ample time to settle in and relax before the test begins.
  • Don't schedule dental or doctor appointments on testing days.
  • Don't be too anxious about your children's test scores. Although it is important to let them know that the tests should be taken seriously, it is also important not to increase test-taking anxiety.
  • Don't underestimate your influence on your children.

Parent Shuttle Bus Service

Thank you for your continued support of our busing program as it enters its 2nd year.  We are very excited to continue to offer a shuttle service from offsite parking to our St. Serra campus during the school day beginning on Tuesday, September 6. We know how frustrating it can be to not find available parking either in our lot or in the surrounding neighborhoods. We hope that this will help take the burden of finding parking when you need to come on campus whether it is for an event, for lunch/recess duty, or other volunteering opportunities.
We have designated parking spaces available for St. Junipero Serra parents and guests located at the Applied Medical offices at 22931 Arroya Vista. This parking lot is located on the corner of Arroya Vista and Empresa, about one mile from campus. You may park your car at that lot and take our own SJSC school bus to campus. The designated spots will be indicated with a school sign. Please park in those designated spots only. Also, please be aware that per Diocesan policy, St. Junipero Serra Catholic School is not responsible for theft or damage to the vehicles or contents on this property.
The shuttle bus will run to and from campus from this parking lot continuously throughout the school day. The shuttle bus will drop you off right in front of the School Lobby.  If when you arrive at the parking lot you do not see the bus, please wait for the next shuttle. Make sure that you allow yourself enough time to take the shuttle and to sign in at the School Office before reporting to your volunteer duty, event or meeting.
The shuttle bus schedule is as follows:

Please note the shuttle will not operate at all or will operate on a modified schedule on days school field trips are scheduled. You will receive a follow-up email once the field trip dates are determined.
The shuttle is available on school days Tuesday, September 6, continuing through Tuesday, June 13, 2017, which will be the last day of the shuttle service for the school year. Please check our website under "Transportation" frequently as these dates may change.  Non-Shuttle days for the upcoming week will also be announced in our weekly SerraDIPITY.
You are also welcome to park at this off-campus site (Applied Medical) on non-shuttle days and walk to campus.

SerraStrong! Faith, Family and Fun Event

Thank you to the SJSC families, faculty and staff who came out to celebrate SerraStrong! Faith, Family and Fun last Thursday evening! The event was a wonderful kick-off to the school year and a great way to welcome new SJSC families into our community.

"Walker" Authorization Form

As in the past, students may not leave campus without having a written authorization form on file with the school. Per Diocesan policy, students may leave campus unaccompanied after school only under two scenarios: if a student lives within 1.5 miles of the school, or if a student is walking to the bus stop adjacent to the school on Antonio Parkway (a bus route number must be written on the form).  There are no other circumstances under which a student may leave campus unsupervised at dismissal.
The authorization forms are available in the School Office and must be returned to the school for approval before a student may leave campus unsupervised at dismissal (approval may take up to three school days). Once approved, the form will be sent to the student's homeroom and they may then begin leaving campus unsupervised after school. All students must exit through the Extended Care gate and check out with the staff member on duty. The staff member will also give the student his/her walker pass the first time he/she leaves campus after school. If you have any questions, please e-mail Mr. Corey Overton, Assistant Principal,Student Services at

Essential Learning Systems (ELS) Program

ELS has openings in both after-school sessions!

Younger students who are struggling with letter recognition, letter sound association, decoding skills, reading fluency, reading comprehension, attention and memory may benefit from this program. Older students struggling with these skills or who lack confidence in their academic skills, have difficulty understanding and/or remembering information, take a long time to complete schoolwork and homework, have limited independent learning skills, and/or benefit from additional academic support can also benefit.

ELS is a computerized, multi-sensory, interactive program that improves focus, strengthens information processing skills, and enhances a variety of academic skills (e.g., reading decoding, reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development, and spelling). ELS provides a fun environment where students strengthen their skills in a game-like format and earn points and prizes for their efforts. Two after-school classes are available:  1:50-2:35 p.m. (for students in Grades K through Two) and 2:50-3:40 p.m. (for students in Grades Three through Eight). Students attend ELS four days per week (Monday through Thursday) for a minimum of one academic year.

Please e-mail Dr. Lori Quigley  at for more information or to enroll your child.

Season's Tuition Assistance Luncheon
Volunteer Interest Meeting Next Week!

This year's tuition assistance luncheon will be held on Sunday, January 29, 2017, from 12:30-3:30 p.m.
Want to learn more about how you can get involved?
We are inviting all who might consider serving on the planning committee, volunteering to be a table (co)hostess or server, or have a high school aged student who would like to volunteer at the event to a meeting Thursday, September 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Extended Care Room.

Working on this event is so rewarding! It is a fabulous way to earn volunteer hours over a weekend while helping raise funds for students at St. Junipero Serra Catholic School and the three schools that comprise the Marian Alliance of Schools in Santa Ana whose students rely very heavily on financial assistance to attend Catholic school.

For more information regarding the luncheon, CLICK HERE. If you have any questions or cannot make the meeting but are interested in participating, please contact Karin Hendrick, Event Chair, at

DENNIS Uniform Sweat/Vests - Monogramming
St. Serra parents, Thank you for your patience with the transition to working with our new uniform company.  The most common question at the School Office regarding the new sweaters/vests is regarding monogramming.  Monogramming is required to be provided by Dennis Uniform for all 2016-17 formal sweaters and vests. Monogramming on sweatshirts is optional. We apologize for any confusion at the Dennis Uniform store during this time of transition. For any concerns or questions regarding your Dennis Uniforms shopping experience, please email Debbie Dubeau, VP Parent Services at
