Mission First! proposal going to General Board in April
Most healthy organizations take time now and again to re-examine their focus and set a vision or goals for the future. While the 2020 Vision emphases on new and transforming churches as well as pro-reconciliation/anti-racism and leadership development continue, the General Minister and President said at the February 2014 General Board meeting, "I believe that there is the potential to build a lighter, more fluid, mission-focused way of collaborating that allows this fleet of boats that is the Church to head off in generally the same direction according to basic mission priorities that we decide together." (listen to full audio here)
Beginning with the appointment of a task force in 2014, the General Board initiated a look into ways that we can find areas of mission focus together. The task force began meeting last summer and has consulted with other Church leaders throughout the year. (See below for references in Communique and Disciples News Service)
The result is Mission First!, a proposal that includes mission gatherings across the various expressions of the Church. In January 2015, a letter was sent to all congregations explaining the general direction the task force is recommending after discussion with other leadership groups. While details are still in process, and the General Board and General Assembly must give approval, the broad outline is painted in this 3-minute video message from Rev. Watkins.

Ecumenical partnership on climate change

Throughout American history, people of faith have been at the forefront in addressing the greatest injustices of any era, transforming hearts, minds, and the course of our country. Today, religious communities are called to bring leadership to a new moral challenge - climate change.
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) through the ministry of Green Chalice has formally entered into a partnership with Blessed Tomorrow in order to join with the ecumenical community to address climate change.
Blessed Tomorrow is a coalition of diverse religious partners united under a call to serve as faithful stewards of creation.
By joining Blessed Tomorrow, we have committed to work together across different faith traditions to express our thanks for God's earth and to engage our congregations and communities in leading on climate change.
Rev. Scott Hardin-Nieri is the new Associate Minister for Green Chalice. He has joined Rev. Carol Devine to coordinate the partnership work with Blessed Tomorrow. Hardin-Nieri lives in Asheville, NC. Hardin-Nieri and his family finished a stint last year in Costa Rica where they served as Global Ministry Volunteers in a vulnerable cloud forest in Monteverde

Rebecca Barnes (PC USA) worked together to write, compile and edit an expanded resource for 2015 that includes a children's sermon, children, youth and adult education materials, a prayer station and more.
The resource will be available digitally for download in February and is appropriate for Sunday School teachers, worship leaders, youth directors and ministers. Sign up for notification
