New phase for five Disciples health and social service agencies A new phase of ministry has begun for five Disciples health and social service agencies. As of January 2014, the National Benevolent Association (NBA)-the health and social service general ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)-will no longer serve as the sole corporate member for the following agencies: the Southern Christian Services for Children and Youth, Inc. in Jackson, Miss.; the Florida Christian Center, Inc. in Jacksonville, Fla.; the Christian Services for Children in Alabama, Inc. in Montgomery, Ala.; Woodhaven in Columbia, Mo.; and the Serra Residential Center, Inc. in Fremont, Calif. The NBA worked with the administration and board leadership of each organization in order for each of their respective agencies to claim full autonomy and authority for their mission and ministries. By releasing corporate membership the NBA will not have a direct vote on their boards, and the agencies' financial statements are no longer included with the NBA's consolidated financial statements. The NBA continues to provide administrative support to the agencies who have requested support as a service for their ministries. These services include accounting, board development resources, and connections to other Disciples health and social service providers. Task force on mission, governance named
At its February 2014 meeting, the General Board requested that General Minister and President Sharon Watkins and Moderator Glen Miles appoint a task force to facilitate and implement a process regarding how we, as one Church, discern God's mission for Disciples today and organize to accomplish that mission.
In Watkins' opening address, she said, "I believe that there is the potential to build a lighter, more fluid, mission-focused way of collaborating that allows this fleet of boats that is the church to head off in generally the same direction according to basic mission priorities that we decide together."
In paragraph 54 of The Design for the Christian Church, the board is to receive, review and refer General Assembly resolutions; approve or confirm General Ministry boards; and develop the process by which the church discerns its collective witness. The board determined that the two primary roles of governance and visioning are not always served well in the current organization and constitution of the General Board.
The first meeting of the task force is set for early May in Kansas City. The members of the task force include seven men and seven women; seven clergy and seven lay leaders; all five regional clusters; six people of color including two African Americans, two Asian/Pacific Islanders and two Hispanics. Ages range from 20s to 70s. They include: Tony Rodriguez (chair), Thad Allen, Lizzy Beach, Rachel Bell, Dolores Carpenter, Jinsuk Chun, Sue Morris, Dee Scoobie, Mark Surles, Bernice Rivera, Robert Welsh, as well as Watkins and Miles. Associate General Minister and Vice President Todd Adams will serve as staff to the task force.
