World Bank Chief Economist Dr. Kaushik Basu, visited The North-South Institute for a roundtable. The objective of the roundtable was to convene leaders from the Canadian research, civil society and private sectors to engage in an informal dialogue with Dr. Basu. Discussed was the World Bank's recently adopted overarching goals - ending extreme poverty by 2030 and the promotion of shared prosperity - as well as Dr. Basu's priorities as the Chief Economist.

The North-South Institute co-hosted, with  The High Commission for the Republic of South Africa, a luncheon and panel with the Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, H.E. Kgalema Motlanthe, on the mining sector in South Africa.

New Projects

The North-South Institute is embarking upon exciting new projects:
  • We are working on leveraging open data for development impact in a project funded by The Gates Foundation;
  • We are expanding our research on natural resource governance with the support of The Qatar Foundation;
  • We are putting post-2015 data to the test in a Hewlett Foundation funded collaboration between NSI, Southern Voices and the Centre for Policy Dialogue;
  • We are studying the role of gender and community based organizations in conflict resolution and natural resource management with the support of UNICEF;
  • And we are looking at gender equality and the coffee sector in Colombia, with funding from DFATD.

Look out for publications, events and infographics stemming from these projects in the coming weeks.
